Don't disguise it hide it - I'm a big fan of false bottoms on a bookcase...... never heard of a thief stealing books.
One of the dumbest suggestions (apologies if it was anyone on here) I heard for hiding gold was to buy coins, and "mix them in" with regular change in a big jar or piggybank. Because no thief looking for easy money for a quick fix is going to nick your jar of change, right?
I would be more worried about my wife looking for loose change and buying a latte for $1600 My father-in-law is Greek, his wife is Australian. Back in 1960 the greeks brough out a 20 Drachma coin in Silver. Same size and shape as the normal circulating 20 Drachma coins which are all cupro-nickel. Needless to say Gresham's Law was followed and all the silver ones were taken out of circulation, until my mother-in-law needed some money to do the grocery shopping. Although the coins were seperate from the normal change they weren't seperate enough. Fortunately the silver price hadn't gone to the moon but I could do with those coins now.
gold in the brick, or gold flower pots everywhere, thief will not take heavy pots, or earth water tank just outside the house in the backyard. golden swimming pot. for the fish ponds? waste dump, storage, square golden cover. if you x-ray. then can see everywhere!
Just hide it somewhere really inconvient to get to there are literally hundreds of places in the average house. Gold coins are pretty compact it'd be a breeze to hide a quarter million in gold coins in your average house.
Hide it at Ben Bernanke's house, its not money and no one would think he has got any. Although he may give it to Vinnies as its an old relic!!
What if your house burns down - could be hard to find amongst the rubble and could melt your lovely coins!
That's what I was thinking, if you're in a major rush to get out (fire, tsunami etc), you don't want to be spending valuable time trying to get to your gold instead of escaping.
I don't have much gold at all so its easy to hide but I do have it in a spot that I can get to quickly if need be but its pretty well hidden and very secure, probably overkill for such a small amount. But I'm paranoid
The reason I worry about fires is that I know a prospector who lost his caravan in a bush fire with stash of nuggets inside. He retreived most of them but they were no good for selling as jewellery nuggets - just bullion. With coins with a high premium it would be sad. Lot more bush fires around now with the hotter drier summers even close to cities as they found out in Perth last year! I like the idea of a heavy inground safe sunk into a concrete slab preferably your house slab when it is first laid or maybe a shed slab - then you can make it thick concrete with lots of reinforcing around it. Then put a heavy work bench or something on top so it is well hidden. Anyone finding it would have to be prepared with explosives or jackhammer and then it would attract a bit of attention! - maybe overkill! Here on the WA goldfields I know of thieves who lifted a whole heavy safe from a house and took it out into the bush to break it open! Another idea is not to keep it all in one hiding place - then if you are faced with an armed robbery - you show them the safe with just a small amount in it or some fake bars in it.
I was hoping to get a mold for casting flatware, knives forks and most importantly teaspoons, you can never have enough. I was hoping to convert some junk stirling into something useful, if it is going to hang around the house it might as well get used and that way I can hide it in my cutlery draw rather than buying a safe, plus you have the supposed health benifits of silver table ware. Not sure that gold cutlery would look that good and the small amounts getting removed in the dishwasher would mean you would have to watch how often you used them. If anyone does know how to make spoons or where to get molds I would like to know, Google has let me down but if I want to make plastic cutlery there is a machine I can get sent from China.
I've an old imperial guard army back in the UK... I reckon I could use the army case for transport. God... nobody'd nick it, let alone be seen with it Geeky hobbies aside - here's my suggestion for carting gold around:
Unless your in India !!!! They would get better money than gold for an organ over there & save themselves the pain. :
from where i stay: "STATE PROPERTY" ANY ONE CAUGHT WITH THIS WILL BE FINED $50,000 people will stay away from this like plaque! Singapore version.
