No I dont think that statement is harsh at all, its the reality of the world we live in. If she is taught to defend herself, and/or is armed then nothing of the sort is likely to happen, just like robbers dont rob houses if they think the home owner is armed (statistics prove this, look at Chicago vs Houston).
Likewise, if you think banks and/or governments are trustworthy then you deserve what you get.

I would suggest anywhere other than a bank's safety deposit box.
If you must use a box, find one at a company that specializes in storage, and not part of the banking system.
That at least protects you from bankers, however protection from government is another matter, diversification across boarders may mitigate that.
But digging a hole may be better in some cases, if you go with gold then you can find all sorts of cracks and nooks around the house to stach it in.
Silver is a little harder, but I'm thinking of buying some tungsten to put with my silver, that way if someone finds it they take the worthless tungsten and leave the heavy but more valuable silver behind!

Any place you store valuables has risks. Unless you plan to stay home with your arms 24/7 you can just as easily be robbed there. Heck, a couple of years ago we were robbed at home while we were sleeping - we never woke up. I guess if you keep valuables in your home you deserve what you get as well.

Utter bastards. The first and most important role of a Government is "supposed" to be to protect and enforce private property rights. (and should be their only role if we were to have a government entity.)
"Unclaimed" super accounts and the accounts of non-residents are already flowing into Swannies coffers thanks to the changes over the past couple of years.
"Unclaimed" savings accounts are presumably in the firing line. No deposits/withdrawals in three years. Clearly the person is dead and without relatives. No one would simply store their savings in a bank account
Unfortunately for the government the banksters derive benefit from such accounts so it'll probably be limited to inactive accounts with balances less than $2,000.
