Taking Silver on a flight from Australia to USA

I have a boxed set of Perth Mint Lunar series 2 bullion coins (the 12 from the 2008 Mouse to the 2019 Pig) that I would like to give to a friend when I go to the US. Rather than post them, I want to give the gift in person.
So I want to take the boxed set with me on my flight. Put it in my carry on luggage to put in the overhead compartment.

And it seems fine.

Have any of you guys travelled with gold or silver before?
Is there anything I need to consider?
 
As it's 999+, you won't have anything to worry about.
Technically you should indicate you have it on the incoming passenger card (if the US still uses that), although it's not strictly necessary for some countries; in certain places it's probably better to quietly mention it to whichever Customs official is having a good old poke around in your luggage...

If it had been of an amount which constituted more than $10,000 face value, it could be a different story, but as it is, just keep it as close to you as is practical and that'll leave you in good stead for the whole journey.



I'll put it this way - even a country such as the Philippines, where corruption is probably still pretty damned common, nobody cared in the slightest when they were informed there was a quantity of 999+ silver within my luggage; they checked the fineness and simply told me to be on my way.
 
Make sure the coins are accessible and not gift wrapped so that you can show the customs and security staff.
