I have a Silver ladle from my grandmother
for sure 100 125 years old

Some times I burn garbage papers and turns out after a burn I see in the ash
my grandmothers Silver ladle all black and chard looking . What idiot put it in trash
#@%@#* I say .

Sure enough some fine steel wool and metal polish cleaned it , Silver is eternal , I figure it's sterling

It depends on where it's from. I have an old large serving spoon (I really don't know what it is called) from the mid 1800s that came from the US that was made from what they called "coin silver" (from melted 90% coins). It has a spot where it had been damaged and repaired, so I imagine back in the day these things were considered important since they went to the trouble to repair a big spoon instead of buy a new one.
