Platinum Philharmonic announced for the first time

Will the platinum coin be the same diameter as the gold and silver? I thought it was cool how they can make them the same diameter, despite the difference in densities.

They just fuck with the thickness

I hope more mints put platinum coins out like this. Fractional would be even better. With Platinum below gold for some time now, I was hoping to see some platinum pandas and britannias released, but this will do for now.

Now you're onto something. But please avoid the fractional stuff. Seems to be fodder for those speculators.

Direct from the Austrian Mint:
(if you prefer a more urban vernacular, its Straight Outta Vienna)

http://www.muenzeoesterreich.at/eng/produkte/1-ounce-platinum-999-5

Mass = Density * Volume = Density * (Surface Area * Thickness)

We know all of the above parameters except for thickness.

Mass = 31.10g (Austrian Mint specifications, published)

Density of Platinum is = 21.5g/cm3 (Source: Royal Society of Chemistry, http://www.rsc.org/periodic-table/element/78/platinum)

Surface Area = A = Pi * d^2 / 4
d=37.00mm
A=1075.21mm^2 = 10.75cm^2 (Carrying only 4 significant figures forward)

31.10 = 21.5 * (10.75 * Thickness)

Thickness = 0.1346cm = 1.346mm

Assumptions:
-density of Platinum figure is for 99.5+ fine Platinum
-surface detail relief makes up less than 0.5% of total mass
