New Coin Releases Come Early For Collectors In 2012

The first monthly product launch of 2012 is coming early for Perth Mint coin collectors.

Set for launch on 3 January, the latest coin releases will be available for purchase via our collector website at one minute past midnight Western Standard time. (12.01am WST Tuesday 3 January 2012).

"Traditionally we announce details of new products around 9.00am Perth time every launch day. Recently, this has resulted in a stampede of online and telephone orders from within Australia, putting pressure on internal sales and administration systems," Ron Currie, Sales & Marketing Director explained.

"We think this change is in the interest of our customers because we'll be able to process some orders overnight before the busiest part of the day begins. By smoothing demand, we are hopeful of avoiding glitches which have proved frustrating to clients."

Ron Currie said exceptionally strong demand for The Perth Mint's Year of the Dragon suite of gold and silver coins in 2011 had highlighted the problems. As a result, the Mint is involved in a comprehensive review of its telephone, IT and customer support resources.

"Changes will take time to implement fully," he said. "In the meantime, it is prudent to trial this kind of move to improve our customer service capability."

Not sure if changing the time will solve the problem.
It will mean people will use the website at 12.01am rather than 9am.

Agreed. What a fail move.

Seriously instead of adding more resources to tackle the issue they decide it'd be smart to just move the timeslot to inconvenience other Australians (what 3am Sydney time?) so there'd be less buyers (potentially).

Guys having worked extensively with server capacity planning, you can't always just "turn on" more server resources, particularly when the web site relies on back end systems. It can be a massive infrastructure and software project that takes many months, longer if old or proprietary systems require redesign or replacement. Being very generalist here but I'm going to assume not everyone on the forum has an IT background.

That's before the minor detail of corporate budgets having a spare few hundred thousand or a lazy million or five depending on just what needs upgrading.

Time shifting the load is a smart interim measure from a capacity perspective, but obviously not necessarily a popular one.

Hi GP, where can we get the info about the 1/20oz Colored Bullion Dragon?

I checked the PM website regarding new releases;

Most of Australia seriously inconveniences the West without a second thought. Try getting work calls at 4/5am from the east - oh yes, I'll take care of that when I get up in 3 hours! What - you don't want to get up at 5am for our 9am EST conference call??? Oh gee, I forgot (again!) that there is a time diff... but can you just write this down....

The Perth Mint is a WA business so it running on WA time and that makes perfect sense. As for more staff - well maybe they coud get that handled too!

When you make conference calls with the US or the UK for business you sometimes have to stake the late nights out, that's life. You're paid to be doing something, even if it's crap you have to tolerate it. Or get a new job.

This is a different ball park altogether, this is a business selling stuff to customers.

I wonder how much of the customer base of Perth Mint is based in WA and how many are not. I'd wager the "not in WA" number is higher.

Either way, they could've done 9pm WA time instead of midnight, at least midnight AEST is bearable. 3am? Not so much.

Whatever though, good luck to them.

Conference calls with the eastern states at 5am, and inconsiderate people on the same level of employment as you, ringing before dawn is not something you have to accept in the work environment. If they were phoned at 5am there would soon be complaints - except that they wouldn't even answer the phone because they don't consider themselves on call 24/7. Large multinational corporations deal with time zones all over the world and accomodate their staff quite well - here in Au it is all about the Eastern States. If you own the business that is different, when you work for a wage you expect the same consideration as the rest of the staff.

I also speak to folks all over the world in another ''forum'' and sometimes another Australian will pop up when the subject of ''what time is it there'' comes up. Usually they say ''oh dinner time at 6pm'' or whatever and when someone asks where they are from the response is just "Australia'', not Sydney or even NSW etc...

In addition, you can no longer arrange pick-up for on-line purchases. We sandgropers will have to pay postage and insurance. Is it not the idea for a company to make things easy for customers?

I agree changing the time the PM server freezes up is no help to man or beast.

I agree but what about the next time there is ??.. As usual total mayhem & dysfunction. When I lived in NZ some years back the NZ government was continually embarrassed by the long waiting lists for surgery. Their solution was to spend $3Mill on a computer program that sent out personalised letters to patients (customers - they were called) to keep them updated and informed. The sheeple would believe that someone gave a crap. Ha ha no one does ....

Just because some customers are **** doesn't mean you shaft every other customer.

If that's the spirit of Perth Mint then a lot of stuff makes more sense.
