NZ Mint auctioning off Dr Who Coin number 00001 on Ebay.

Do they do this for every no 1 coin they produce? Just seems odd that they would do that , then again you really don't know what goes on at other mints , insiders cherry picking mintage numbers etc.

This just makes me think that NZ Mint must be hurting for cash.

If they are going to start selling on ebay regularly, I hope they realize they are going to upset a lot of their distributors.

There's no mention of it that I saw either. Just a cash grab by the nz mint. Also who says its the first coin minted? It's just the first COA

Guys relax - this is not a spot auction - this is for numismatic collectors and yes - it may or may not be the first one off the production line but it does have the COA #00001. Some people "have to have this" others think they're nuts. The same as I roll my eyes when my wife and daughter find a "bargain" handbag - hey who am I to say it's not worth that.

Perth Mint keep #1 of their products. Every so often you see others do the same or put them up for a charity auction. I have to admit - this is the first time I have seen a Mint do something like this and yes - as a NZ Mint distributor I don't like it but at the end of the day - I can't tell them how to run their business.

Just sit back, grab the popcorn and enjoy the auction - cos this one will go for nuts money. :)

Thought about this some more and this could be a good thing , what better way to find out if a coins going to be "hot" or not, let the mint do all the leg work and build up the hype etc , if the number 1 coin sells for a large amount of money then there is a good chance that the rest of the coins will be in demand. If the number 1 coin is a bust then stay away from the coin. Sometimes every cloud has a"silver" lining :P

The no 1 tooth fairy coin is not doing quite as well: ...Meh ...stay away from this one lol.

Interesting to see NZ Mint being so money-grubbing and disloyal to their dealers and reps.

If NZ Mint isn't morally and ethically bankrupt, they need to prove it by donating whatever $$ they make from this brazen money-grab to some NZ charity.

I've though you all know movie Wall Street. :) If you didn't see it, I suggest you do it. There is no "chivalry" left in business (if there was any). It's just business. ;)

Money rules the world, not people.

EDIT:
Russian proverb: there is no luck in money, but in its quantity.

eBay , what a good corporate tool, for individual bidders most of the uncommon times !

I find this sickening. So if you are a collector, chance of you getting the first c.o.a of a hot coin at retail price is close to 0. Or if you want to buy a Koi coin with number 8 in it, chances are you won't get it because if NZMint feel there's a demand for this c.o.a, they will reserve it to sell it on Ebay. To me, it is almost the same as the Perth mint reminting some of the bullion coins.

Up to $1,127.

Some people are prepared to pay some crazy amounts for a piece of paper with a number 1 on it instead of any other number.

In my opine, even though I am not a coin collector, experience has shown that a 1st issue Dr Who coin is a bargain at <$1600.
