Well this unintended series on silver bullion comparisons is bringing a lot of attention to the profitability of Pandas.

First off, when it comes to coins, I was until recently very generic silver bullion heavy. Most people that have known me for a while know that the majority of my trades previous to this year, have not been Pandas, but sovereigns, PAMPs, Pre-Decimals, Kooks, Koalas, etc.

I'll declare right from the start, I'm not a huge Lunar fan, I'm not a fan of the Chinese zodiac... weird but true... not for any reasons like mintage numbers or quality issues... Lunars just don't appeal to me... but as the saying goes "let the chips fall where they may". I'm after the maximum return on capital investment - as hopefully you are too.

I was going to auction off a few of my Lunar coins; but fortunately jpanngy has done the hardwork for me. (Which is cool, cos he got a pair of my 1/2oz Pandas for a BARGAIN! when everyone was sleeping)

1oz 2010 Lunar series 2 Tiger @ $55
1oz 2010 1oz Silver Panda @ $65

In this match up, it's fairly obvious which is the winner once again... but someone previously objected, claiming that maybe the 2010 Panda price was a fluke - a lucky punch perhaps? This is easily refuted since the next highest bid was $63.50 (by a wonderful airsoft panda).

If I had more 2010s on hand, I would probably auction them now, and see what price they would fetch today... such a shame... but oh wait, fortunately there is someone that posted their desire to BUY a Panda... so let's see what they value the 2010 Pandas at:

"WTB 3 2010 1oz silver pandas for $60 each plus postage"
http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-11906-wtb-2010-pandas.html

Wow! The market forces are strong with this Panda... $60!

So with two independent sources on silverstackers (an auction and a WTB) showing the strength of the 2010 Panda to be valued at $60-$65. The Panda once again stands undefeated.

BUT... I must say, I am surprised that the 2010 Lunar Tiger is no pussy cat. It has actually put up a better fight than the ASE, Maples and Roos. The Panda is only ahead by 9-18%, whereas in previous bullion matchups, the 2010 Panda was ahead by a much greater margin.

It should be interesting to see how the 2009 Lunar Ox holds up to the Panda of the same year... do the Lunars start pounding on the Pandas, or do the Pandas still hold the title of Undefeated Bullion Champion?

Hope you found this interesting.

Thanks for reading.

Next time something like that happens again, I'm going to say "I just got Jpannged!" :)

2010 panda is available from apmex for about 55-56 aud depending on exchange rate. If you can avoid the fedex-gst then it's not bad of a value, but you can't avoid fedex-gst, so be prepared to have 10% of its value ($5 or so) locked by fedex for 2-3 months.

Lunar silver is also available around the same price.

Like for like, lunar silver is doing pretty well in australia even toe to toe with pandas. Some series not as well, but most series are o.k.

Future pandas with crazy mintage should not do as well, but time will tell.

Yennus, I hope that you are not taking my posts personally/to heart. I appreciate the value you are adding to the forum with your experience in this market, however I think it's important to view the market without rose coloured glasses and not fall in love with what for most is an investment purchase.

Hey Hobo-Jo, not at all... No offense taken. I appreciate the time you take to respond, even if I completely disagree :)

I can totally understand the position where you come from. I imagine I once came from the same position you are in. If you looked at some of my previous trades prior to this year, you would see that I have come from the position of being a purist bullion stacker, to seeing the huge potential and actualized gains in Pandas.

But in regards to the Ebay comment. Ebay is useful, but it's barely (pun intended) the best place to buy Pandas. Like you wouldn't buy go to the local McDonalds for a prime steak, you wouldn't buy your best Pandas on Ebay.

I think it's a natural progression into Pandas for those serious about maximizing their returns.

First stage - get out of fiat into real money... E.g. bullion bars, ASEs/Maples, etc.
Second stage - get into real money that has spot price as its stop loss, and the sky as its potential value ... E.g. Pandas (and perhaps Lunars... we will take a look at these in the coming days)

I'm am a total n00b but from what I've seen I think it's probably fair to say that 2010 tigers sell more frequently @ $55 than 2010 pandas do @ $65.

A truer indication of their general pricing would possibly be tigers @ $50-$55 and pandas @ $50-$60.

Fair call or not?

Having said that, there's no way on Earth I'd actively choose to hold tigers over pandas.

I gotta agree with Thehuclker

Mixed thoughts here although I agree with the gist of what he said.

I tried selling Tigers @ $50 2 weeks ago, took ages to move them. This week, no problems at $55, snapped up fast.

This is just my experience and probably may vary for different people.

@peter
do you play airsoft?

I miss shooting dudes with plastic bullets.

No I dont, but like the idea of shooting dudes with plastic bullets. :)

It's awesome, I think it simulates close quarter combat perfectly. Long range is just a joke, the bullets fly where the wind takes them.

Makes me appreciate how hard it is for the security force. You can't dodge bullets mate, it's point, one pull and thats it you're fragged out of existence.

excuse me, but please don't let the pandas and tigers fight each other.. they're both endangered species..
let them grow separately at their own pace :P

None, cleared all of my trading stack now only got a few left which I'm holding.

Got some 2010 pandas though, thinking of chucking them up at $70 each to see if anyone bites :D

Experiment, experiment.
