MIT developing platinum replacement

Hmm. Article is dated April 2014, so I'm wondering what the progress is on using tungsten carbide as a PGM replacement.

Still won't affect the collectibility of proof platinum eagles though I feel.

But the price of the Precious metal at spot has to have an effect
It seems platinum has gone as high $2300 spot
does that cause a platinum proofs to go $4000 each ?

It is said 48% of platinum use is catalytic converters
if 48% was now available as glut - that would lower spot
hopefully the luxury of owning (new rare) numismatics it's fine.
But the final core spot value in the long run needs to stay strong
for our investments to stay attractive as a hedge for storing wealth
wile the Mit report is not at this moment , it's some thing to consider
for me when I purchase Platinum bullion for 10 to 15 years out

Amazing how Platinum goes up and down so strong
 
I highly doubt that this replacement technology, even if it takes hold, will have an adverse affect on the prices of collector platinum coins. I wish it did because only then would I be able to afford a proof American Platinum Eagle (APE). In the meantime, I will just continue to dream of owning an APE one day.

This is not the first or the last so called Pt replacement. I have seen reports on a variety of materials including graphene impregnated with cobalt. Each of these compounds are reported to be the new catalytic replacement for PGM and each has fallen flat. I wonder if there is some other research that can be done which has greater benefit for mankind than finding replacements for PGM. Just a thought ? :)
 
Looking forward to it, then I can justify getting a platinum coin to add to my display of silver and gold. I see their value, platinum I don't see maintaining it so I will never stack, but I'd like 1.
 
Developing is the key word. A lot of things get developed, but very few work in real world application. Remember research labs rely on funding, so they like making headlines. They feed on the ignorant, but at least they are doing cool things unlike bankers.

So I say keep stacking that platinum :D
