Masterpieces in Silver: Definitive ASW List

Inspired by projack's previous work, I decided to put together a list of the entire Masterpieces in Silver sets to date. My sources were:
* 1998-2011 -> http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/purchase/mintissue.cfm (from the original magazines)
* 1988-1997 -> http://www.australianstamp.com/Coin-web/aust/proofset/masterpc.htm

What is below is correct to the best of my knowledge. If there are any errors let me know. Also if anyone knows the ingot weight from the 2006,2007 sets let me know :)
(Thanks to Dan Unda for filling in some blanks as well)

1989 ingot -- 23.57 gms

1991 " -- 16.13 gms

These are specific items that I weighed, no idea of "nominal" weight...

2003 Port Philip Patterns set has an ingot.. The two I weighed went 20.22, & 20.28 gms

I think the 2006 set has an ingot as well, but I don't have one of these, so don't know the weight..

Also, the published spec for the plaque in the 2000 Monarchs set, is incorrect..
Weight claimed is 29.5 gms .. They are in fact 38+ gms.. Bonus !!
I've weighed several of these, only one went a whisker under 38, all the others over (by varying amounts) ;)

edit -- Prob'ly shoulda kept this bit under me hat :D :P :lol:

:) :)

I can't believe I didn't notice this in my own set! I weighed mine just now and I got 19.88, so I will use this lower of our values to be conservative.

I might leave this as is at the moment .... maybe there were inconsistencies during manufacturing? Who knows. Would prefer to keep this list as conservative as possible, and like you say, if any bonuses are achieved, then good!

I've had this 1988 Silver $1 for ages, never knew it was part of a set until this thread :)

Are you also wanting the actual mintage, because the stated ram mintage (preset before sales) and the actual mintage sold vary according to the two sources of Australian numis goods. I can supply the actual mintage if required.

I bought some masterpieces in silver 2006 at our Rocky Coin Fairr. When I bought them I thought they were sterling silver 1oz. The set cost $160. To my surprise when I read the Certificate they are
99.99% Fine Silver. Weight is 36.31 and diameter is 38.74.
They are Proof and in the coin catalogue the mintage is 6018. I
hope this info will help you.

Thanks, this is great. I think your catalogue is breaking out the general issue plus the coin fair sales separately, which is fine. I will add them together for our figures.

You get honourary naming for v0.4 of the table :)

what needs to be considered as well that in the years of 1991 and 2004 very few of these sets will be intact. Many, many of them have been busted up for the individual coins. :( for the sets :) great for collectors : intact sets worth more money as time goes on :)

Good point ... in fact, a lot of these sets are being broken up now (especially the 93-97 years). A quick search on ebay will show these individual coins being offered and sold.

1992 Royal Ladies...

These are 4x $25 coins @ 33.63 gms, + 1x 45mm medallion @ 50.44 gms (.925)

By my calculations, that's 5.5006 oz ASW

(apologies for the "nit-picking" ;) )

:)

guys, i have the 2001 port phillip set, what is this about the ingot? i dont know if my set has it or not. is it the oblong down the right bottom corner that says 2003 Masterpieces in Silver ? this doesnt seem to come out of the case. am i missing something? how do you know the ingot is silver? cheers

I like collecting the 1998 Milestones 50c Crowns.
Not sure why, I just like them.

Shame about the sets being busted up though.
