JVP investment coins

Hi,

I am fairly newish to collecting silver & gold. Up until recently I was only interested in getting silver at the cheapest price regardless of type of coin or condition.

I am not sure if it is just boardum with ASE or what but suddenly I am attracted and find myself attracted to these "collectors" coins that they charge way over spot for.

I see these coins put out by "jvp investment coins" sold on NZ mint site/Ebay they have animals on them and crystals. They also make a bunch of other fantastical looking coins. I really want one, but they want $200 for 1 oz of silver so I haven't done it yet.

What do you think about this coins? Waste of money or do you think they will hold any value? I also got some Isle of Mann coins and paid a little over spot for, but felt more comfortable investing in these because they are Pobjoy mint.

Thanks,

Liz

While they wont have crystals and fancy packaging, there are plenty of collectable coins for between $5-$20over spot.
Good compromise in IMO. Look into kookaburra, koala, lunar, panda, taku, brittania, and elephant 1oz silver coins.

As to the question of collector coins as a good purchase - in my view, it really depends on a few different factors.

But first, you did mention about a coin with crystals. These types of coins are relatively new as far as I know. In fact, I have read recently that the first coin made which has gems in a sealed locket goes back just to 2002 when the Perth Mint produced a Cook Islands silver and gold locket coin (here's what the gold coin looks like): http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cook-Island...9197304?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item3f356bce78 .

Since this coin, many collector coins have been made with jewels and crystals, including the now highly sought after Tiffany Art silver coins.

Now as to whether these are good purchases depends on what your reason is for buying coins; sometimes people have more than one reason or the reason changes over time.

Next, it depends on your personal situation; where you are located, what age you are, what communities you are comfortable connecting with, etc, etc, etc.

Naturally, what collector coin or coin series to buy is an important factor; there are winners and losers. Here's a coin from a winning series as just one of many collector coins that have gained meaningful premiums: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Liberia-200...191251138140?pt=AU_Coins2&hash=item2c8774c65c . Over the past 18 plus months I have seen other collector coins like Perth Mint Lunar proof kilos sell at significant premiums as just another example of coins that might be considered winners. But there probably are at least as many loser coins as winners so choosing which coins will win and when to buy them is something that takes either a lot of experience, luck, or lots of pull within the communities that buy coins (or a combination of all these).

Pure bullion coins like ASE's for example, are more or less tied to the spot price of silver. If the market consolidates and prices drop for years after you've purchased bullion coins and you need to sell during that time, you will be on the losing end especially if selling back to dealers who won't even give you spot prices for your coins. During a period like this, you might have been better off if you'd purchased some collector coins at a good price...and that's where timing comes in. When to buy a collector coin is as important as which one's to buy....but there isn't a formula that works consistently for all collector coins.

Me personally, I have some bullion coins (and blobs) and some collector coins. Sometimes I like to think of my blobs and bullion as plain old water and the collector coins as wine. Nothing really wrong with owning either....but they do tend to serve a different purpose at a different time for a different price.

Thanks for replies. I am still going to primarily just buy regular silver coins, but maybe try to get one from each country to add variety. Koala's, Panada's ect..

I'll look at these pretty "investment" coins as something for fun, and only if I can get them for a good deal on Ebay. Kinda like jewelry.

Make sure if you get them on eBay it's from a reputable dealer so you don't get a fake. Try jmbullion or apmex or a site like that.
