Guess what this is? (silver trivia)

Hi All,

This is a bit of fun. During the met up Aurora Et Luna (hereinafter AEL) pulls out an intriguing old piece of silver.

As I like collectables and older things, I asked what is it? The response was"no body knows!" then AEL suggests that I take it and find out what it is and mentions that it was posted about a year ago on this forum much to the dismay of the members, no one knew.

So here are some photos for those who have never seen it and as a reminder for those that have....

Can you guess what it is?

I am going to give a hint tomorrow and reveal the answer on Wednesday! (so newbies can play - AEL suggests to tease you guys with the hint!)

There is a spring and you can push it together and it springs back apart...

I can't describe its function in mixed company.
Just that the new owner (Sammysilver) is ecstatic with his new toy. :P

Let me explain it delicately....if you swabbed the surface after you use it and then transferred it to a petri dish ....things will start growing rapidly on the agar. All the silver in the world won't be of any use.

The guy obviously loved tools with his initials engraved on them maybe he should have included his phone number on it & left it on the table :/

edit ; i hope its a dentists tool looks a little uncomfortable if it isnt
 
The engraved part looks a bit like a guitar pick in shape, is it something to do with a musical instrument?
 
HINT: "Sometimes things have to be moved backwards in order to go forwards"

(It's an old piece that need a little tinkering to work)
