With the price of gold soaring to historic highs, Colombia is in the throws of a gold rush unlike anything it has seen in years. Across dense jungle and the rural countryside, wildcat miners are tearing up huge swaths of land in a frenzied search for the precious metal. But even more worrying for authorities is that this gold may be fueling a new chapter in the civil conflict that has defined Colombia for the last five decades. Navigating the ever-shifting frontlines, National Geographic correspondent Mariana van Zeller examines how left wing guerillas, criminal organizations and international mining companies are all staking their claim to Colombia's gold.

Not a bad watch.

It always amazes me how lucky we are living in Australia or any country that the standard of living is half decent. ;)

The shear effort and costs involved with digging out a mere shaving of gold is just unbelievable till you see it on programs like these. How the locals need it so badly they don't see what they are doing to their country, town, health etc. Count you lucky stars are you in Australia and next time you winge about something so microscopical small (like your milk is sour, the train is late, the internet connection is running slow) just sit back and remember where you are in the grand scheme of things...
