$27,000 its always a catch 22. High spot prices bring the nice coins out for sale but only for the few who have the $$$
 
Saw a Perth Mint sov set similar to this one (but an older issue) at a dealer once.

All the rarer coins were removed (I assume the dealer had picked them out).
The rest were being taken out of the case with pliers by one of the staff as I walked in - for melting (well at least that's what they told me).

Exactly, they reduce the number of available buyers significantly.

As trew said, it looks like the better market is in individual coins?

Still, I'm always sad to hear of a piece of history being melted.
