for brisbane stackers gold prospecting trip

hi guys and gals this has been touched upon awhile ago but i dont think anything came of it.

im interested in a feild trip to do a bit of gold prospecting so if any of you are interested please let me know.

i was thinking off a place called deep creek , its on the outside of gympie its a fossicking area so you will need a licence.
you can get one of these from qld gov site

or you can get one on the day from the cooloola info centre bruce highway gympie qld 4570 telephone 44825444 or the brisbane mines office
costs are
1month $6.50

6 months $24.20
1 year $40.60

now i know most of you will say its more than likley been picked over badly and i would say yes but you never know and this trip would be more of a get together and a bit of a play ill be bring some metal detectors to have a look around and would more than happy to sheer them.

so if anyone wants to have a go let me know so we can work out a time and place to meet i would like to make a day of it so lunch and drinks are a must

didn't know metal detectors were on the market for wool products :D

Would be a good idea, trying to get a group together in the pilbara, near karratha/wichham

How far away is the deep creek from the Brisbane CBD ??

The other thing, with the licence being paid for on Bruce Hiway, is that on the way towards Deep Creek, or am i better of getting it online?
 
hi yes its not far from fossic area you can also download of the gov website

i knew someone would make a comment like this - didnt expect it from you :)

chapperone - you mean if we strike it there and find some nuggets so that we dont shoot each other.

Things are getting hot (wish i knew how to make the word hot glow red) in deep creek. Deep creek lol doesnt sound like a place to mine for gold.. focus on deep
 
I beat you to it! I went there a couple of months back.

You can hire everything from the tourist information and it is just a short drive to get to the creek, you can't miss it as it has holes dug all over the place I was there for a few hours and all I got was a herd of cows defacating in the water I was using to wash the dirt. And a leech.

Had a couple come over, they had been prospecting all over, showed me a nugget they had got from somewhere else, they showed me how to pan, they didn't find anything, nor did they find any of the other minerals associated with gold.

Packed it in early and left penniless.

Still, I may have left something!

Damn you THUCYDIDES79!!!

Foiled again!!!

It is not a bad day out, when we went we just turned up on the day. Turned out there was a country music fest and a go-karting championship on that weekend and every room was booked out, couldn't believe it! We ended up driving home with nothing to show for it other than a nice new plastic gold pan (in pretty much mint condition) and possibly leptospirosis.

The wife spent her time reading a book and looking at the cows, we are not really country people so it was good for novelty value but I didn't manage to make back the money I spent on the pan.

I think you can hire pans, shovels and picks from the tourist info place for a couple of dollars, they also had an ancient looking metal detector but that was up on the wall and about $75 to hire, I figured we wouldn't need it.

I think if I go back I will get one so at least I know I am digging in the right spot and not just randomly washing dirt all day.

There must be better places to prospect, I didn't notice anyone in Gympie looking particularly rich so I am guessing that not even the locals consider it worth spending time there.
 
Any of you guys have skills/experience?

I am sure there is a knack to it but when I went with my wife it was the blind leading the blind.

I have seen a few websites that have tuition, e.g. show you the ropes, how to look for it, what to look for, what indicators there are that gold is in the area and some do an intro to metal detecting.

I might go on one of those before I head out on my own again.
 
i was a opal miner for years in qld opal fields does that count lol and by hand no machines

and im very good at finding things
 
I'm a Brissy boy and have shot up to deep creek before. Just with a pan by the creek, No licence ;) had no idea what i was doing. Found nothing. BUT with a detector you can cover A LOT more ground. With the recent rain, nuggets could have been dislodged from the river bank and found themselves in open places. Best bet is to not try the easy access spots straight off the road, but walk down the creek some way where you will have a much better chance. I also believe theres some markers layed out to indicate where you can and can't detect. ...but its only a few little sticks in the ground so just keep walking.

If you pull out a map you will see there are actully plenty of small creeks all around gympie that have either been mined back in the day or left because there wasnt anything. Might be worth checking these creeks out if you game.

I would be keen to come along in a few weeks if we want to have a second expedition. Planned out and targetting certain areas.

On a side note, there is plenty of old rusty pieces of metal siting around from the old days...might get you excited.
 
Uh, guys, Deep Creek is kinda far away !!

Its as far away from Gympie as Gympie is from the CBD ?!

I have to re-decide ?!

Arent there closer gold bearing patches ?!

Thought this one needed a BUMP!
Thucy,Deep Creek,is very close to Gympie township.Camping for an o,nighter close by.

Have been chewing the fat with purgatori and an expedition is planned for sometime in June.Please contact purgatori if you are interested.We are committed on this.(Or perhaps should be committed?) Ha ha.

There may be gold in them thar creeks :)
