Last year the New Zealand Mint released the awesome Doctor Who 1 oz Doctor Who silver coin in a Police Box, I am a big Doctor Who fan and this is one of my favorite collectables.

Late last year they released this little baby:

Generally speaking I tend not to buy gimmicks like these that are over twice the price of their actual silver value but this set is limit to just 3000 and it looks like an awesome collectable.

I know there are a few Whovians on these boards, what are your thoughts on this set?

Yes seen them in the flesh at Peter Strich's , would love to get the set
But I'm not willing to pay the premium

I like Dr Who and related paraphernalia.

But the reality is that in a few years time, they would probably only be worth, maybe double spot.

Yes, it is very interesting how most series are only worth 50% of purchase price after 12 months or so. There are exceptions like the D & D series and the Treasure series. The problem is picking the right series that goes up in value. Not an easy task. I have not bought a perth mint proof coin since 2011. Prior to that I had heaps of them, but soon realised that generally speaking you lost money on them. Someone put me onto SS and bullion and have not looked back since. However I bought my first perth mint proof today (since 2011), the Zeus 2oz coin. Have taken a punt that it could very well be the next D & D series. Have to wait and see. I too very much like the Dr Who series. But am not all that sure the coins with go up in value. Very very nice looking coins though.

Nice looking set, problem with this kind of thing is there'll be more doctors.
so if you keep it too long the premium will drop as it's going to be missing doctors eventually.

...and post-canon it is missing the "War Doctor as portrayed by John Hurt" and technically the 10th, so either the mint will need to produce an extra one or reissue the entire set including Hurt's Doctor.

Allons-y :D

Hi All. FYI BBC Worldwide advised us that the 'War Doctor' is not counted as the 10th Doctor. They have indicated that the 12th Official Doctor will be Peter Capaldi. They are not retrospectively altering the numbering of the doctors.
We envisage releasing Peter's coin sometime in 2014 when we are able to access correct images of him and the story line surrounding him, in order to complete our coin design.
