hi guys, what do you think of this coin design, popularity? will it be another red-back coin?

coin will be produced by Perth Mint and issued by Coin Club Australia (release on coming feb).

note: this is not the final design of the coin..

I highly doubt it will be another redback coin. I wouldnt buy one thats for sure. I'm over buying anymore dragons. The design isnt that great either.

I think anyone who hasnt all ready cashed in on the dragons as a retailer/mint will strugle to sell in a hurry. All depends on the mintages though. Be easy to sell 10,000-20,000 but going into the hundreds of thousands will be very hard.

Will there be a series or is this a 1 off ? I see the mint hasnt dropped their proof prices from about $107 after spot has dropped, so not keen on these coloureds at all. It may very well appreciate but history shows with Perth Mint coloured proofs that odds are it will drop below issue price over time.
 
Any idea on the cost price for these? In terms of design i would get rid of the horns.
Horns symbolize power and the dragon looks better to the western mind without them.
A full frontal design would be interesting.

RRP cost price will be around $107 or above (not sure yet)

this is 5-coin series, red welsh dragon is the first coin of this series
 
Love the Design but dont pay $107 for a one ounce coin, also annoyed to hear PM is doing more side projects rather than minting lunar 2012 dragon bullion tbh.

Gets down to money I suppose? If theres more cash to be made doing this mint to order, I suppose they will. Still, I reckon these things are so hit and miss, you have better odds at the casino.

A hit = a substantial current market value over issue price.

Sort of hit = a small current market value over issue price.

Miss = .....you've burnt your cash....

Hit - > Redback, Tasmanian Tiger, Lionfish

Sort of Hit - > Working Dogs Labrador, 4 others from the Deadly & Dangerous (except Redback)

Miss - > Great warriors (5 coins missed in total), famous battles (5 coins missed in total), famous naval battles (5 coins missed in total), sea Life series 1 (4 coins missed) (except Lionfish), sea life series 2 (all coins a failure), Great Composers (all 4 coins missed), Great Russian Minds (missed), ships that changed the world (3 coins missed no winners).... might be more but all I can think of right now !

Summary there is: Hits = 3 Coins. Sort of Hit = 5, Misses = 32

Better odds at the casino.....
 
Coin Club has released two series in the past; The Working Dogs and the (ongoing) Wildlife in Need. In both series the first coin appreciated (albeit not greatly) over time, especially after subsequent coins are released. In fact, this happened to many other coin series as well. For example, Canadian Wildlife Timber Wolf, Australia Sea Life I Lionfish, Tasmanian Tiger, Redback, etc are all first coin of their series.

A (potential sleeper) coin worth mentioning is the 2010 High Relief Kangaroo. It wasnt gaining much interest until the 2011 version was released and how it's hard to source for it at cost price.

This dragon coin could be the third series Coin Club is releasing. If you are a numis person, may be worth to get a few.
Probably not a Redback, but probably worth keeping a lookout for.

pS I read somewhere they are trying to release a new series every one to two years.

What's your opinion on orang utan, panda and polar bear wildlife series? is tat sort of hit or totally miss as well?

Yah kindda agree, i think it's whether u personally like the coin design or not in this one.
 
What are the other dragons going to be? My other half is a Celtic/Welsh dragon kind of guy. Doesn't like the Asian dragons.

Was just thinking the same thing...is a welsh red from that Harry Potter filum?..along with the Hungarian Horntail, Ukrainian Ironbelly, Chinese Fireball etc?
I hope they don't include the likes of Puff, Falcore or H.R. Puffnstuff :/

....come to think of it...the Welsh Dragon in HP was Green!
 
Actually the First in the Working Dogs Series the Labrador had got up to like $130 but is now barely an $80 coin and is now a loss, so add that to the fail column. And this series has 3,000 of each coin rather than the usual 5,000.

The Wildlife Series I put into the loss column as well. They sell for about $100 which is their issue price. Depending where you sell it, you have costs to take from that price.

I forgot to mention about some other dud Perth Mint series of the last year or so as well, Tanks of World War 2 for example, easy 50% loss if you bought those at issue price !

The other sleeper is the RAM's Kangaroo @ Sunset 2009 release which is the first in this annual series. I stocked up on a few and can go now for $150+ and were I think $50 or so issue price back in 2009 from memory.

Not to be confused with the RAM's carded Kangaroos that started in 1993. The 2012 issue price of $87 is an affront and I wont be touching this one at all. The RAM released the 2012 with a price tag of $60 and within a few weeks due to "rising" silver prices pushed it up to $87. Silver is now $30 and ounce but I dont see them responding by lowering their Roo price.

Both the RAM and Perth Mint remind me of the banks. The mints justify their rising prices because silver is rising, when silver falls, their prices dont fall. Like the banks, interest rates go up they follow suit immediately, interest rates go down, they think about it or ignore it (especially credit card interest).
 
Matthew 26:14 you have a good point.
Do you thing if silver drops (for example) to $15 an ounce, Perth Mint will drop their prices too from $104. That's how much they charge for "2012 WILDLIFE IN NEED - POLAR BEAR 1OZ SILVER PROOF COIN". Or they still will charge customers the same price.
I haven't bought anything in January release, and most of the coins are still available on their website from January release.
