Platinum is so expensive that there'll be a real financial incentive (a catalyst*) to seek cheaper alternatives.

*: Shout out to the chemistry nerds; pun fully intended

Yes, there are alternatives being developed.

There is a general trend of replacing critical materials with abundant materials to make them cheap.

Some I have heard preform better than platinum as a catalyst.
