Best performing lego sets and best buying

I have been collecting lego for some time now and thought I throw some of the solid returns and places that offer good deals.

In the last few years one of the most popular series and best performing sets is star wars. The ucs sets released every year have done very well.

Other series that have done favourably are architecturer and creator. Traditionally any new ideas like lego ideas I think will do well, sets with a large amount of pieces or unique first time releases.

The biggest ever lego set to date is the taj Mahal with 5922 pieces and it fetches solid premiums.

This years Millenium Falcon ucs is over 7000 pieces, is selling for $1299 and almost impossible to get unless you are a lego member.

In the last few months myer have has several 40% off specials. Shop for me regularly does good pricing and target and big w has their 20% off sales regularly.

At present hobby warehouse has 20% off on ebay and toy r us have clearance lines going cheap.

I have the 1st releace of the X wing and darths Tie fighter, have many lego star wars models.

Yer i like that latest Millenium Falcon but it a lil outta my price range, i would love to get the big AT-AT walker.

I like the lego technic porsche as well, i have the frent loader with the motor to power it...
 
So now tell us about the storage. And how long you hold on to them before you sell them. Do you sell them or do you, like me, keep hold of them forever watching the price rising but never selling any?

I have some sealed boardgames and card games, exclusives and rare items. And a couple of Lego sets. I have now filled two wardrobes with the stuff.

My wife only has one wardrobe for her clothes so this is causing some contention in the family.

I tell her how much they are worth but even when you say the value has tripled to $2400 on some items you then get the third degree as to how much you spent on it in the first place, god help me if an item was bought after we met. most of the stuff got in under the grandparenting rule but if I was to spend $700 now on a box of Magic Cards I would never hear the end of it, even if it has doubled, she will just tell me to sell it and get my money back, plus despite showing her numerous completed eBay sales, she still does not think anyone will pay me what they are repeatedly being sold online for.

I am guessing storaget has to be somewhere dry. The boxes need to be kept clean and un-dented. I am guessing if you stack them too high the ones on the bottom are going to start to show signs of damage.

I keep something similar and each item has to be put into an airtight rigid plastic (Food safe) box with some anti humidity packets. They stack pretty high.

However I now have an entire room devoted to storing this stuff. I am guessing if I moved out of a four bedroomed house and into a three bedroomed house then the saving on rent would be much better than any money I am hoping to make by having to rent a larger house to store it all.

But it is fun speculating on the Kickstarter Exclusives and anything that doesn't go up in value just gets given as Christmas presents anyway.

Trouble with plastic is that they are not running out of the stuff and unless they have made a commitment to never bringing back older items (for anniversaries or special events) then there is nothing to stop them releasing something that is the same as, similar to or better than something you put aside and have been sitting on for ten years.

I popped in to Toyland or whatever it is called and saw the new lines in Lego and was pretty impressed at the range, sadly I only have a niece so I have to buy Lego Friends which don't even look like proper minifigs. Here's hoping that she gets into star wars so I can buy that instead.

Have you seen legos new release walker? Not as cool as the original but still nice.

I agree storing is always an issue. Plenty of used up filing cabinets and cupboards that's for sure. I usually get my lego in the original storage boxes shipped from lego which makes for safe storage.
 
I bought a Star Wars Super Star Destroyer a few years back and left it untouched in it’s box. Looking at AU EBay it has climbed spectacularly. It has appreciated by about $1200 + in 4 years over what I paid for it so the right item is definitely a good investment. It’s apparently the physically longest model that Lego has ever released.

How good is it
 
Imho, stacking lego sets for an investment (or "best buy") is like a 'hit and miss' experience, same as we buy new bullion products. There are so many of themes (and new ones keep popping up so frequently until you get really sick of them) plus continuous HEFTY discounts from retailers, we cant really flip them easily.
Then as pointed above, the storage issue.

We are praying the sets to go retired soon so we can have value appreciation but again, Lego itself have been reinvented a new similar set from highly sought retired sets (e.g. millennium falcon, carousel). Yes, you can say different set but will you pay a zillion dollars for a retired set where you can get a new similar set for a fraction?

Perhaps lego minifgures are a better buy than the lego sets.

Yes very true....plenty of them demand high premium.

You need to be good at your fingers to guess what inside the sealed bags hahaha
