Apple could become world's third biggest buyer of gold

According to MoneyMorning.com, the new devices "won't just be the most sought-after gadget of the year", but also "the world's biggest gold price catalyst of 2015". The most expensive model, called the Watch Edition, will have a case made of 18-carat gold and will be priced from $10,000 to $17,000 (about 8,000 to 13,500 in the UK).

That's all about the case...

I think the iwatch will be a fail anyhow. Only when miniaturised holographic projectors are cheap with the watch format have its day.

I wold bet on this (holographics), VR and AI as the next consumer wave not these stupid watches whether from apple or Samsung

Disagree totally. I think Apple will sell millions of watches. Think of all the drivers looking at their watch as their hand rests safely on the steering wheel. I will certainly buy one.

I expect that within ten years it will act as a remote control on my new knees and hips. Perhaps I'll programme a few dance moves that I could never master.

I have a variety of smartwatches that I have assessed and I found them to be novelties with no compelling use scenarios.

If you want a smartwatch ones with similar functionality at very low prices have been available for years. Some are in my opinion superior to the iwatch some are worse.

The iwatch offers nothing except the opportunity to milk a brand. Apple could release cheap sunglasses at $500 and some types of individuals would queue for them.

The iwatch is an utter non event in tech and smartwatches are kind of useless really.

Apple should not have shipped it and their hand was forced by Samsung a year ago with the gear and gear fit.

They are all novelties including the iwatch.

You're making mass consumerism sound gross. If your opinion is correct, you should buy Apple shares. If your body is as old as your soul, then you would wear a watch. At the moment, most people under 30 don't. This fact certainly creates a void as the consumer will be making a new purchase rather than replacing an existing commodity.

Unfortunately smartwatches do little except act as Bluetooth ui devices for mobiles in a stupid format.

Ever seen a gear/gear fit from Samsung - out a year ago? Nicer generics than Samsung or apples offerings have been out for years. They just don't do anything very useful.

Have you used a smartwatch?

Mass premium brand consumerism is mostly for morons who like to advertise the fact they are gullible. It is gross.

Back in 1975 I had an analogue wristwatch with an alarm. All my Army mates could not believe the technology!

LOL

Yes I remember Texaco doing a promotion for a digital watch that you could plug headphones into for an am/fm radio 30 years ago.

Clive Sinclair was a genius.

I would no more invest in apple than Victoria beckham. I like to invest in next wave technologies not 'brands'.

I don't understand the Gold version, typically and historically you would make watches, cigarette lighters, pens, tie clips, hair clips, cigarette cases etc. out of gold because they were made to last generations and you could pass them on. If you spent $17,000 on one of these iwatch's would it not just be out of date in 12 months time and your left with $2,000 worth of 18ct scrap? Quick way to blow $15K I guess.

Apple are marketing to those under 30, 12 months is a lifetime.

Regular marketing practise...gets the media an easy story to run. Gold plate Xboxes, playstations etc.

One will probably be worn by a trophy wife for a week before being forgotten in a drawer in a London penthouse. Some will be top level corporate gifts etc etc.

The smartwatches I have looked at (20 different models and brands) were not used by anyone I gave them to for more than a week. Young or old. The only one that stood out for me was the gear fit because of the nice screen format but they are all including the iwatch just gimmickry and not very useful (unlike mobiles...).

Here...cheap and useless but does most of what an equally useless but not cheap iwatch offers...

Never looked at them until now
They should be called a"DUMB WATCH " maybe :P
It's just another device to talk to your other device
All I want in a phone is " I WANT IT TO MAKE COFFEE " FFS :D
Once they have that sorted out they can come back to me & I'll buy one :D

I'll give an appraisal on my iWatch when I get one later this month.

Best of luck and hope you do enjoy whatever you get but these things (smart watches) are not game changers. Small colour screen and small battery + Bluetooth. Sigh another piece of tat to keep charged. They will all wind up in drawers. Even apple marketing will have to work overtime to overcome the nerd factor mixed with the uselessness.

You can spend 50$ right now and get a product that does the same thing. You could a year ago. Strikes me that this is somehow different in your estimation if because apple marketing has you by the balls or you are an Apple stockholder trying to relive the glory days of the Iphone4 who has not yet found out smart watches are kind of pointless.....

Aye I may be a sour old bugger but I'm not wrong on these toys.

I would give 10 grand for a watch that could make coffee, dispense lit cigarettes and good scotch. As regards counting the number of foot steps I make or telling me what altitude I'm at. Not so useful.

For style nothing beats a good solid gold mechanical with a leather strap. Nothing with a battery.
