2014 Canadian Maple or 2014 American Eagle

Hey guys just wondering what your thoughts are with these two 1oz coins?

The maples are slightly cheaper than the Eagles by about 75 cents per oz (prices from perthbullion.com), but then there's the possible milk spot issue that comes along with them. From what I can see in previous posts the maples have a bit of a history with the spots.

Do Ase's have milk spots issues? Is it worth worrying about? If you had to chose between the two (with the price and chance of discolouration taken into account) which would it be?

I'm pretty new to this so any help would be great, plus if I'm missing anything please enlighten me :)

ASE's are subject to milk spots too but nowhere as as commonly as on Maples. If I was in 'Merca and wanted to buy a tube I'd go for ASE's. Big buy would be Maples for those extra ounces and higher face value.

I've sold 3 tubes of milk spotted Maples for around the same % premium as I paid so milk spots didn't really seem to affect resale.

There's only 20c difference at Pertbullion.com ;)

I would choose ASE's, I think they are beautiful coins, very detailed. And the milk spots on the Canadian coins scare me.

I HAD a 1000 oz of ASE's and a lot of them developed milk spots, sadly. They probably got the blanks from the RCM. Why limit your choices to maples or ASE, why not kooks? :-)
 
I've got a few hundred ASEs, check them occasionally, never seen a milk spot.
Bought from a variety of sources, over nearly a year of time, with several year dates, 1987 to present.
Anything can happen, some things just less likely than others.
From what I gather - I do not have any Maples - if you have one tube of Maples, expect spots.
If you have ten tubes of ASE, be surprised if any spots develop.

Both are so close to bullion, I expect to get some Maples just to round out my holdings.
 
If you're lactose intolerant, stay away from the Maples because the milk spots might give you gas. :o

If the day comes when the $5 vs. $1 face value is relevant, I think we're all in trouble. :mad:

Seriously, if you're just starting out, get some of each and see which one's you like better. Add in some Kook's, Philharmonic's and Libertad's (my favs) too.

Well if kooks was on the table. That would be my number 1 choice. As Perth mint stuff makes up the majority of my stack too, as you know barsenault :)

To reduce any spotting / tarnishing, I recently bought some of these: http://coinarmour.com I am waiting for them to arrive, if they are good quality I am going to put everything in them.

Indeed, I'm actually buying the comic magazine bags (same material) and will fill them with the rolls.

Gotta agree with this. Notice how their comparison photos are "Intercept Technology vs. no protection". Why not Intercept vs LDPE Poly Zip Bags?. :rolleyes:
 
Neither. Both CML's and ASE's are not going to gain you much premium at all unless you get them graded and they grade very high. If you want most value based on spot plus smallest premium paid, go for the lowest price blobs (common, non-denom bullion bars) you can find.

There is something pleasing in knowing your Maple is .9999 pure compared to the ASE at .999 only.
I have seen ASEs rise in price in the USA way higher than the Maple but guess price is determined by demand.
Selling however is by weight alone unless some people are looking for specific years.

You guys are unlucky. I sold 900-1000 ASEs last year that were stored in tubes and there were no milk spots.

Why settle for the pathetic Maple, it's only .9999 (way too much alloy content). It's so much better to buy the .999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999
