2014 Britannia

Im curious what the forums opinions are concerning the relative lack of enthusiasm for the 2014 Britannias. It seems as though the Royal Mint fixed the scratch problems and now they are .999(its even on the coin). The mintage is still maxed at 100k so how is it that these are available everywhere? They have a proof like finish and look amazing. I've read that some do not like the light strike look it has but I really don't see that being an issue. Thoughts?

I'm not sure where you got the 100k figure from, that was pretty much busted by 2010.

Mintage figures for 11 & 12 are: -

2011 269,282
2012 361, 870

This is direct from the director of the Royal Mint Museum, so is not conjecture.

No accurate figures are available for 2013 onwards as yet, but expect them to be over half a million.

Unlimited mintage, so anyone that wants one can get one. The Royal Mint killed the Britannia as a collectible when they stopped the changing designs and stuck to the one in use on the 2013 and that will continue moving forward. It's now joined the ranks of the Maple, Eagle and Philharmoniker as a straight bullion coin, not a semi-numismatic. If you want a different Britannia every year you have to buy the proof sets which, while they are really nice, are ridiculously priced.

The Britannia has been replaced by the Royal Mint Lunar as the semi-numismatic silver bullion coin.

Agree entirely.

However, we shall see if the lunar horse does anything special.

I have a number of full date runs of BU Britannias, and the new issues are not a patch on the early years.

Well that would explain it. I thought they were still making only 100k. Thanks for the info guys. I ordered one of the 1oz GB Lunar proofs so I'm excited to check it out. I haven't heard very many good things about the BU though. So as far as government coins go it's looking like the Libertad is the rarest as far as mintage goes. Anyone know when the 2014 silver Libertads are coming out (Apmex, Provident, etc..)?

Libertads have been pushed back by the mint. Late June/early July
