Noticeboard at my supermarket looking to buy 1966 50c coins

Yeah, it's true, it's a free country and nobody is forcing people to sell at this price. I guess I just can't believe people wouldn't spend 2 minutes looking on an auction website to see how much they go for. And it's definitely less unethical than those nasty "cash 4 gold" booths you see at...

Noticeboard at my supermarket looking to buy 1966 50c coins

I noticed this weekend when I was shopping at my local suburban Coles supermarket that there was a photocopied flyer on the public noticeboard. It was someone looking to buy 1966 round 50c pieces. Lots of info specifying that they're only interested in the round ones, not the normal ones (I can...

    Peace Dollars

I picked up a 1922 Peace Dollar on the weekend at an antique store in Melbourne. Paid $30 for it, which I think is a bargain for numismatic value (and not too far off the melt bullion price). It is a very beautiful design, nice to add one to the collection.

    Proof of Gold bubble

Those graphs look extremely persuasive. If I didn't know what I already do about the US economy and its inevitable collapse due to debt, I'd be re-thinking my gold buying after seeing those graphs. Oh well, in it for the long haul anyway!

    'A Golden Crown'

Gruesome. In 53BC the Roman general Crassus was captured by the Parthians. He was reputedly an incredibly greedy and wealthy man, and the Parthians symbolically killed him by pouring molten gold down his throat until his bowels burst. Which I think would be worse than having it poured on your...

    Coin shop experience in Melbourne

I hadn't even thought of that - thanks, good advice. Might work out after all.

    Coin shop experience in Melbourne

Hey, I totally get that the owner has to make ends meet and put food on his family's table. I was just surprised at how much over spot he was. If he has to go to extremes, so be it, but I suspect that would just compound the problem of too few sales. I guess that's between him and his...

    Coin shop experience in Melbourne

Hi all, just wanted to share my experience yesterday in a coin shop in Melbourne. I won't name the store, but it was in a suburban shopping centre in the North East. It was my first time visiting this store, and from the outside I was most impressed. Really nice retail space, large and roomy...

    thinking about getting gold

You also can't go wrong with buying sovereigns. 8 grams of gold, internationally recognised, and much much easier to justify than purchasing a whole ounce at a time. The only downside is that you have to pay GST if you guy from a dealer.

Selling your house and putting it all on silver and gold

This is massively risky. Some people here say renting is smart. I'll admit that in SOME cases, renting can be better financially. But in 100% of cases it also sucks. I don't want to go back to house inspections, having to ask to put a screw in a wall to hang a picture, dealing with scumbag real...

to buy or not to buy?

I think that tiny sentence beautifully encapsulates why I stack. Those 22 words better explain my philosophy than pages and pages of justifications elsewhere. Nice one Auspm, you pithy wordsmith!

    old banknotes

Bottom pic, the Japanese Government One Shilling banknote is from WW2 - these were printed and used in parts of Oceania where Japan occupied territory. Not sure if it's worth much, but from a militaria perspective it's probably more interesting than from a numismatics perspective.

Anyone stack RHODIUM? I'm tempted by a Cohen Mint 1oz rhodium round.

I think the Cohen Mint's previous releases were 1g coins, and from what I've seen they were pretty crappy and roughly minted. As Goldpelican mentioned, this new one is a 1oz issue - I wouldn't order until photos were available, rather than concept art, but I have to say (coming from a big fan...

Anyone stack RHODIUM? I'm tempted by a Cohen Mint 1oz rhodium round.

Do any of you stack rhodium? I'm tempted by a new round due to come out in the next few months from the Cohen Mint in the USA, because it's so utterly drop-dead gorgeous (plus I think rhodium is due to take off soon similar to palladium 2 years ago). However, I have 2 concerns. 1. I've...

The Creature from Jekyll Island - book

I've read a lot about the Federal Reserve system in the USA, and I completely understand the notion of their fiat currency being doomed sooner or later due to ultimately unpayable debt inherent in the creation of every single Federal Reserve note. Do we have the same system here in Oz? The US...

    Assets and consumables in ounces

Thanks for putting this together s1lv3r, what a beautiful idea. So if the cost of an item rises from month to month, how do you tell if that is inflation or if it is rising PM costs? (Is that one and the same thing?)
