From my understanding, that doesn't work for slabs or coins too, only bars. The plastic gets in the way of the ultrasonic and the coin design screws up the detection.

With proper lighting a camera phone does very well in terms of picture quality. It really depends on the purpose. Depth of Field is where camera phones lack.
