I am thinking about buying a 1kg coin. Either a Lunar Snake or a kook.

I was wondering what would be likely to increase in value more, the lunar series is definitely popular now, but will it be in 20 years time? Or will people be after the new lunar series 3?

I assume kookaburras will be produced each year for as long as the mint continues, so they may be worth more in the long term as more collectors come into silver and start collecting old kook coins?

What would you buy? 1kg Lunar Snake or 1kg Kookaburra?

HA. A 1kg Stock Horse coin. LOL. That would be cool.

I can't afford both right now. I think I will get the snake. And maybe get a Lunar Horse sometime after September or later in the year.

The subject of the Lunar calendar animals will ALWAYS be popular amongst collectors I believe....you just can't go wrong with that theme. Besides, a panda is not a series....it's a once a year and then repeats every year. Pandas are generally produced in quantities that far exceed Lunars and so if scarcity means anything to a collector, the Lunar wins on that front. The Lunar is always a series of 12 which definitely increases variety of design which drives interest for collectors in most cases. I just compared a recent release of a 1 oz silver Panda and a silver bullion Lunar. The year I chose is 2010 since Panda and Lunar coins from this year are still readily found selling on eBay. I looked only as listings which sold. From what I can see, the Lunar Tiger won handily in terms of price sold for.

UPDATE....in the the kilo size, it appears that the panda is the winner.

Thanks mmissinglink, I was thinking Lunar as well.

I am not sure how well it will do in the future compared to some of the other lunar coins, the rabbit for example I think will sell well, and the Lunar Horse, if it is nice will most likely be the most successful, horses are very popular. But I had to get the snake, I have a 10 oz, missed out on the 1 oz :( the coin is amazing, such a nice design in my opinion.

1oz coins are the most widely collected sized coins. Also the 1oz Lunar series have a low mintage of 300k. And although the other sizes don't sell huge huge quantities, they are minted to demand, so in theory the market could become flooded with these sizes. Also I believe, though not sure if 100% correct, that they Perth Mint can mint any of the past years lunar coins of that series whilst that series is still being made.

The 1oz is limited to 300,000 coins and sold out where as the other sizes are unlimited. What is confusing to me is that if you look at the sales to date, the others are low sales so technically there less of them in existence unless there is a huge run on them befor the next lunar series gets released. http://www.perthmint.com.au//docume...nar_Silver_Bullion_Series_Two_2008_-_2013.pdf
