Were the 70's scarier than now?

When I think about what was happening back then, it seems much more of a doomsday than now.

US defaulted on their gold debts, went off gold standard. Made all currencies in the world Fiat - not backed by anything but US dollar.

Gold and silver started to spike up to fenomenal never in history heights. Massive rush.

I would assume people at that time were thinking - massive collapse of western economy. Back to trading in gold and silver and even barter.
I assume people were preparing for SHTF, buying canned food, buying guns etc.

And then BAM, gold/silver crashed like little babies and FIAT currencies were back in business ruling the world.
The elites got the power back.

I know I'm missing heaps of history here but this is why I am posting. Can anyone shed some more light on these thoughts. Maybe even someone who was a precious metals bug back then can give some perspective on their thoughts at that time vs their thoughts on now.

The way I see it is, compared to today...they had less to lose back then.

No one in this country had very much. What the current crash would result in a return to the equivalent of 1970's living standards. Frugal living. movies = a very rare treat. Take away food and resturaunts once a month at best. Camping holidays etc. and a single crappy domestic made car 20 years past it's wrecking date!

Yes they were I've seen the pants and hair.......

seriously yes they were simply because people didn't have the information they have access to now - people fear the unknown.

Yes! They were scary times. Different but scary. The doomsday clock was a lot closer to midnight than it is today.

I was not as frightened as much financially as I am today but the threat of being nuked was always on my mind.

Teenagers who lived in the 50's, 60's and 70's didn't give a F... about the economy but they sure knew how to protest against the Vietnam war. The only thing you craved for was a nice girl and a car to have a cuddle in.

Yes the cars were not as cool as today's cars but they sure were a lot better than the 1920 models.

Todays generation are really doing it tough though. I wish it was different but there are a lot of problems to be solved and I hope it all turns out well.

As far as information goes.well there is no comparison. Eg I have been an avid reader of "the Australian" newspaper since its inception. Last week I cancelled my order. Why? Because I get my news on the internet.

Please note I'm not in conflict with any generation for in a hundred years history will record that we all lived in the olden days.

    Regards Erol43

Well the seventies scared me so much I moved to a self-sufficient commune to await the end of the world as we knew it then. My guide was a history of anecdotes about the Great Depression, the fate of peasants in the Russian Revolution and John Seymour's gardening books. As I discovered, and as you might well have noted, the world didn't end, and I resumed decadent western life in the late eighties. Just in time for all my previous fears to be realised it seemed.

Livin in the Seventies - Skyhooks.
    I feel a little crazy
    I feel a little strange
Like I'm in a pay phone
    Without any change
    I feel a little edgy
    I feel a little weird
    I feel like a schoolboy
    Who's grown a beard

    I'm livin' in the 70's
Eatin' fake food under plastic trees
My face gets dirty just walkin' around
I need another pill to calm me down

    I feel a bit nervous
    I feel a bit mad
I feel like a good time that's never been had
    I feel a bit fragile
    I feel a bit low
Like I learned the right lines
But I'm on the wrong show

    I'm livin' in the 70's
I feel like I lost my keys
Got the right day but I got the wrong week
And I get paid for just bein' a freak

    I feel a little insane
    I feel a bit dazed
    My legs are shrinkin'
    And the roof's been raised
I feel a little mixed up
    I feel a little queer
I feel like a barman that can't drink a beer

    and

It's bound to get ya in
    Get right under your skin
Hit you right on the chin - oh yeah
It's bound to be a thriller
It's bound to be a chiller
It's bound to be a killer - oh yeah

    The planes are a-crashin
    The cars are a-smashin
The cops are a-bashin - oh yeah
    The kids are a-fightin
    The fires are a-lightin
The dogs are a-bitin - oh yeah

You think it's just a movie on silver screen
And they're all actors and fake old scenes
Maybe you don't care who's gonna lose or win
Listen to this and I'll tell you somethin'

It's a horror movie right there on my TV
Horror movie right there on my TV
Horror movie and it's blown a fuse
Horror movie, it's the six-thirty news

Pretty much catches the vibe of the day

Let's be honest, there was a lot of super bad disco too ;-) And somewhere in there rock lost the plot too between its stadium and prog incarnations.

Regarding the seventies, I'm to young to have partaken, but the oil embargo in '73 was a big shock and a wakeup call to oil dependent developed countries I understand. There were drive free Sundays in Europe. They opened the freeways for people to walk and cycle along. I think (once again, not speaking from experience) that the oil crisis, brief as it was, had a great deal of impact on the Western mood. Of course 15% inflation was pretty serious too, but debts as a percentage of income were waaay lower then compared to now.

Mine too, and I'm not sure we are richer now beyond the most basic material sense. Certainly the environment isn't. The places I camped as a kid are covered in crappy holiday homes now

the bad disco end of things was only a brief 2-3 year stint at the end of the decade though. There was 8 years of solid stuff before that then you had Larry Levan's Paradise Garage after the cheesy disco phase. At the same time you had punk rock and new wave.

Transpose to 2011 where dubstep is considered to be a groundbreaking musical genre.

Punk, new wave, etc naturally emerged as an edgier opposition to the softer 'pop' & disco music, in the same way pop/disco themselves replaced the harder pub-rock of the late 60's/ early70's. (sort of a counterfoil as the pendulum swung from 1 extreme to the other.

I can't imagine what will emerge as times get tough...everything lately seems to be a rehash of earlier hits...
This guy seems to have found some melodic abilities though

yeah Cee Lo is alright. There's still some okay stuff coming out but it's buried in a tsunami of mediocrity.

Put Skrillex into youtube and see what you get..

Anyone from Sydney remember the Bondi Lifesaver club up at Bondi Junction?

Used to love climbing the back fence to save $2-$5 to get in.
How about the Bondi Regis hotel?

INXS on a Sunday arvo for $5.

Or Midnight Oil @ Selinas @ Coogee?

    Or ?????????

    Bit of a haze..............

    Renne Geyer?

Throwing empty beer cans at Doc Neilsen from the Angles.

    Drive in movies?

    5c pinball machines?

    When did seatbelts become law?

    Libraries had card catalogues?

    1st colour TV's?

People at petrol stations who would do the fuel, water & tyres.

    Datsun cars?

    Torana XU winning Bathurst?

    Paddington Sharpies versus Bondie Surfies?

    Can't remember much about finance.
