Fakes still cost quite a bit, and if they don't get stolen, you are left with a safe full of fakes! Buy some pre decimal silver, if it gets nicked you have only lost half as much as if it was pure silver. If it doesn't get nicked then you haven't wasted any money.

But if you really want some, ebay can help with some plated look alikes.

Searching on eBay for '100 mills' will turn up lots of look a like items, most are fantasy pieces but they look shiney.

If you think someone is going to nick the safe just put bricks in it. If you think they are going to break in just buy a better safe. If it is just for a decoy I wouldn't spend too much on it, or filling it. A few gold coins are worth nearly $1000 so you don't need too many.

Hide your gold better. I hid 10 ounces when I'd been drinking (back when I was wealthy) and I had a devil of a time finding them again even though I knew what I was looking for. The crazy thing? I live in a two bedroom flat

I don't understand why you would want to do what you are asking.
But that said, don't buy fakes and encourage such businesses, go the predecimal option or the better hidey hole as was suggested.
If the thief finds out that you have fakes in a safe he'll wonder why.

What a bizarro req?!? I reckon it's either an insurance job in the offing or a sly way to impress a girl & get (rhymes with 'paid') quick - fumbler on the tumbler - lol! Either way, good luck with it ;)

Reason for the safe is this senario.

The wrong someone finds out you have gold/silver at your house in a safe (loose lips sink ships I know) . Threatens my wife and says open safe give shiney stuff!!!!! I open the easy to find in a cheap safe and give him the contents mean while the real goodies are in a real safe very well hidden.

Any way thanks for the tips guys there is some good stuff on ebay was just searching with the wrong words!

LOL you better hope your wife doesn't find this thread. I don't think she would appreciate gambling her well being over some PM.

Just put your PM in a non bank owned safety deposit box and get insurance on it.

If things really hit the fan to the point where the government is ripping open safety deposit boxes looking for gold to steal, then we have a much bigger problem than simply wealth preservation.

then keep a few 10 oz silver bars or small stuff in the easily accessible safe that way you limit your losses in the event of a break in, don't waste your money on non-pm's and don't contribute to the production of fakes which originally are intended to rip off people into believing they are real.

I think it might have been Yennus who once told me it was illegal to import fakes into Australia. Anyone able to inform this?

Absolutely. The AFP will be your new best friend if you do. Crimes (Currency) Act 1981. There's a clause about reasonable excuse for possession, but basically you'll need to prove in court you had a reasonable excuse - it's not to be taken lightly.

Does it apply to fake bars as well. I know AFP would have jurisdiction for counterfeit Australian currency but what if someone imported fake maples or fake bars?

I believe that knowingly importing counterfeits is illegal but I don't know which legislation covers that area.

Just currency, but ANY currency - so that includes fake silver coins if they have legal tender status, e.g. Pandas, Maples. They are definitely interested in counterfeit international currency, not just Australian.

Using fakes as a decoy is a bad idea.

If they knew you had bullion, and find out they got fakes, they are likely to come back - and force you to reveal the real stuff.
If they didn't know you had bullion, but then find a bunch of fakes, they will guess that you do have real stuff, they are likely to come back - and force you to reveal the real stuff.

Either way you're inviting someone to have a second crack because they got fakes the first time.
