Cooling marks. Somehow a perception that these marks make a bar more valuable has crept onto the forum in the last month or two.
Thank you for this info GP. I have read yours and others comments which rightly say something like "beauty being in the eye of the beholder" and remind myself to reflect on those words. The so named "swirly" pattern is quite appealing to me as it says something about the process of manufacturing a silver bar. I wouldn't pay any more for such a bar, but again that's a personal thing. But I do like them quite a lot. I don't see anything wrong with someone calling them "swirlies", "curlies" or whatever. If we dislike a member or dislike their style we all have the option to move on to the next post. Isn't this more about the agro a small number of members harbor toward each other? I haven't been here that long but seem to recall there being some kind of directive that we restrict our comments and questions to the matter at hand and not to enter into banter or side swipes at other members. Personally I enjoy a bit of light hearted banter, which technically I shouldn't post. Even though tempted to buy into some threads I choose not to as it can only inflame an issue even further, which I don't think is helpful when all we should be trying to do is buy and sell metals??
Just a clarification G.P. I understand that a standard 'blob' bar isn't made any more valuable with Swirls/cooling marks, (Stackers buy these to buy silver as cheap as possible / maximum their ounces per $ outlay) But I would have thought these cooling rings might add an extra uniqueness factor to rare/vintage bars. If you are buying old vintage bars, isn't part of the premium you are paying for the bars "look", "character" and "uniqueness" don't the swirls potentially add to that? Or would you make no distinction and purely value the bar on the brand/rarity of the bar? Would be interesting to see a simultaneous auction of the two bars in post #16 Would anyone pay a premium for the top bar? I think I would bid a (small) premium on the top one if they were auctioned side by side. Disclaimer: I have never owned a swirly bar
I like this idea and would very much like to see the 'shiny bar' in a head2head with the 'swirly bar'. I know which one I would prefer to own.
Anybody who thinks that paying extra for a shwirly bar    Especially the 10oz PM  The cooling marks are NOT WORTH A PREMIUM It's the early PM bars with odd weights that fetch a premium
I honestly had no idea of the controversy I was about to unleash when I pointed out that one of these bars had swirls! Sorry guys, lesson learned!
Got these today, two consecutive serial numbers. They look really old, lots of toning on them. The Australian and New Zealand Metals Exchange Company? I need glasses.........
Can anyone provide any information on the above bars? Anything at all would be a bonus. Thanks in advance
These are mid-to-late 1970's bars - and very nice too! ANZMEC was the AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND METAL EXCHANGE COMPANY - which was a sort-of cooperative venture between a few Aussie & NZ co's in the 1970's - much of their product was melted down as the silver price rose to a peak in 1982, so these are actually fairly scarce now. I have had a couple of the 100g ANZMEC SILVER ROOS through my mitts in the last year, both bought for around $100-125 each and which have now found new homes in UK & US. he did a great video of one of the 100g Roos here - check it out [youtube] If you ever want to part with these I'd definitely be interested to buy one or more Cheers, VRS
Thought I'd better post this here whilst I remembered - just sold on Feebay for $202 Importantly, check out the inverted '1' and 'A' substituted for 'I' & 'V' of 'SILVER' on the stamp - as rare as they come...
VRS thanks for your response, really appreciate it. Good to have some background, they are older than I thought. Bars will go to my sons when they are older with instructions they are to be passed to my grand kids. Will they actually do it? I hope so but probably not.....
Haha! You should probably sell them and put the proceeds in to Bitcoin/Litecoin - or do what I'm doing, which is spending my kids' inheritance (as bloody-well as often as possible lol!) Cheers, VRS
Anyone recognise the dcl stamp on this Harrington bar? [imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/10599_20131125_154019-1.jpg][/imgz]
hmm, similar question got asked on the below thread not long ago.. http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-30568-please-help-identify-this-fugly-100oz-silver-bar.html No reply there either, and google isn't easily giving up a response either.. hopefully for you that means its quite rare..
Bigcountry, I have a Harrington with very similar stamps, including the DCL. [imgz=http://forums.silverstackers.com/uploads/10741_20131125_220555-1.jpg][/imgz]
