Looking closely at the other one on ebay it shows the reeding only on the minted side as well same as your one
Another Uniface surfaces ! I found this at a local coin fair. It is a uniface 2oz Pt koala 1993 It is the same diameter as a 1 oz kook but thinner and weighs 27.7g Its not Pt I think its silver but not 0.999 - will get an XFR Reeding on side all the way across
Glad your keeping with it! I think we all want to know about them. By the way what is pt? Platinum? Sorry ignore the PT question I just see the platinum struck on the coin
Yes Pt is platinum but this coin is not platinum. It is either a trial coin for the 2oz strike or a sample. I will get the coin XRF done and then repost. Value who knows they are pretty rare and sell on Ebay for $100-200
Hi Ronnie, I do have a few of the 1994 Koala 1/2 and 1 oz Pt. I have a couple of the 1/2 oz Pt, let me know if you want to swap.
this are not real silver coins but silverplated demo's for stores to put them into their show display, you see them now and then on ebay. Maybe a magnet helps to get proof of metal.. never had one myself.. Mos fun is when somebody offers a kilo kookaburra coin on ebay for a bigger price then an real silver coin, and other people bid on it..
The kook uniface is 0.999 silver as tested on the PM varifier and XRF. It's not plated as the PMV detects plating. The pt koala fails the PM varifier so you may be right it could be plated? Magnet test - it's not magnetic so ???
Ron Is this coin potentially similar to this old post i.e. novelty coin aka medal? http://forums.silverstackers.com/topic-26630-1993-2oz-100-platinum-koala.html
The kook version is very interesting one...looks very legit to me only amazed the other side is blank
I will get more info this week and post it up. This is not a fake but what it's made of or why it was made is a bit of a mystery. I will find out more and let you all know.
Here is a whole boxed set of Perth mint gold nugget uni face for sale. Good for a collector! But I am sure they will end up in a factory in China. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Australi...00834574487?pt=AU_Bullion&hash=item5d539a3897 It seems to me that the Perth Mint uni face coins are for display purposes without chance of them ever being used at any time as counterfeit.
Sorry to revive an old topic but we've been looking into these uniface "trial strikes" for a while and have worked out what they are. Makes for interesting reading: http://www.australian-threepence.com/coin-news/perth-mint-off-metal-trial-strikes-what-are-they/
Thank You thepurplepenny for the work on finding the information. I hope stackers who were part of the group buy on the Monkey Medallion is happy with the background story.
