The angst of buying from Ebay.

This is why I avoid the place... the extra few bucks you might save are not worth the 'I wonder' moments you'll forever carry with buying from there.

Firstly weigh them, are they 31.1 grams? Then if you choose move on to the specific gravity test, thats pretty much the definitive test that one.

As Ag mentioned, the sg test is not definitive for silver.

    FAKE!
Acid tested, went black then burned the silver plating off, copper underneath.
Now I contact pay pal and get refunded thru buyer protection and contact eBay get his account closed.
At least I can now identify fakes with the ping test. I knew something wasn't right straight away.

Fakes are on the rise huh?!

Imagine IF silver takes off... I'm sure those that want to suppress the price of silver invest a little in these counterfeiters. That is why all of my stack is in perthmint coins and usually not 1oz. The likey hood of seeing a fake 2011 1kg kookaburra coin is slim to none AND the likely hood of getting the response "take it up with ebay", after showing the police that someone is dealing in counterfeit AUD is 0 zip. Bars = easy target IMHO and I have 0 in my stack

** Edit *** sorry I do have some Silver stackers branded lego :D

It weighed 31.2 also. Nitric acid only real way of testing,
I had my Scottsdale bars I bought off eBay tested and they were fine, they were bought off Sammysilver, him and silverspiritAU are the only two eBay sellers I'm buying off from now on,
I contacted the ebsyer who sold me these will keep u updated

So the only really way of testing a bar is to destroy it...

    Fuck.

This is why I don't have a single silver bar anymore.

My 10oz silver takes the form of lunar coins (perth mint) :)

Only bars I have now are SC / PM 10oz's - sticking to coins also now, but bars are so cool to just stack :(

Not exactly destroying... Can u even see the acid test mark on the Scottsdale.. I've had worse on Perth mint bars from the manufacturing process.

Agreed - links to websites where these fakes originate are not to be posted on Silver Stackers.

That photo is a useful reference - if you see bars being sold in that packaging, stay clear.

Acid testing won't show a fake if it's been plated.

I need to post a video how-to on the lost art of specific gravity testing.

Hmmm ... so are the more experienced folks saying avoid bars? (In silver) To be safer? I have PM 1kgs and 10ozs as well as PAMP 10ozs - also PM 1kg coins so it looks like my strategy has some inherent safety (only bought from here and a site sponsor) ...

So in continuing to buy more silver (in larger quantities), coins are less likely to be faked, therefore buy PM coins (and they are federally protected, being actual currency?).

Very interesting and thanks No1joey for posting ...
