Hard to take comfort there when one is just a wispy little fluff of vapour oneself

Some wizened commentary here. I'm starting to get inhibited about making my facile comments on this forum!

I stopped being confused (I mean deeply confused) in my forties when I stopped caring. Raw experience brought me to the belief that the people who have political persuasions of a leftist kind aren't all that caring either. This made me relax about being an apathetic pig. It's been therapeutic.

Just to play a bit with Dabloodymess' stages - the 'Acceptance' that he describes looks more like a regression to 'Bargaining'. As if the cure for one's own cancer has been found by taking herbs.

Aus thanks for the edited version of your last post. Much better/clearer now.

Gino - I have no idea what that quote is supposed to make me think. I failed miserably at poetry interpretation/comprehension when I was in high school

Well thats the best descriptor of not giving a stuff about things outside your circle of control/influence, but still working towards a good life for yourself and loved ones that I could think of at the time.

I am open to yoour thoughts on the acceptance stage :)

Just to clarify what I mean about circle of control/influence I grabbed this illustration:

I guess what I am overall saying is that people are getting needlessly worked up over things that sit in the outer circle, outside of their direct control or influence.

I stopped watching the news when I stopped watching the television and I no longer read the newspapers.

I had to invigilate an exam today, so I was stuck for one hour with nothing better to do so I grabbed the week's newspapers that were lying around the library.

What a load of rubbish, they should be called Entertainment Papers because there was no news in them, they must be read purely for the purpose of passing the time until you can get back to a television.

Anyway, the reason I stopped watching the news was because my dad is a news addict, he changes channels so he can see if there is any extra information in the different news programs, I nearly had a fit when they brought out 24 hour news channels.

Anyway, he gets worked up if he misses anything and freaks if you touch the station (or the radio settings for that matter). It isn't healthy to get so worked up about something that you have no control over.

Since I stopped watching the news I haven't been blown up by one terrorist, I guess what you don't know really can't hurt you!

Oh here we fkn go again with the self righteous BS about how reno & his ilk are a waste of space & auspm is the only one with the cognitive ability to discern right from wrong .
How many times do you need to profess your superiority in moral standards & everyone else that works hard & takes risks is somehow a gutter scab for using a system provided to them . Doing nothing illegal just working hard & having the balls to put their money where their mouth is instead of sitting on the fringe of the outer circle whinging like a spoilt 8 year old about its not fair .

Lets face it aus your an angry man that hasnt got the nouse to use the system or to make enough money to participate in the game because thats what it boils down to . Youve often said you want a home but you cant afford one . So by my inferior cognitive skills it means if you had the money you would but you dont & paint everyone with the same brush that does .

Lets face the facts you have failed in the financial side of life . Im sure you have succeeded in many other facets of your life but your financial acumen leaves a lot to be desired . Its ok you cant be good at everything .

Your anger towards those that have is obvious . I have always been happy for those that do ok I couldnt give a shit if they have more or something better than me .I actually make friends with people like that & ask them how they done it . Not sit back with a scowl on my face givng them a dirty look because they have made it .. You might want to try that one day

    Well, since we like sayings...

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing - Edmund Burke

Open your mouth to protest the injustice (even amongst 'fellow' stackers) and look how quickly you get slammed down for it.

Many here pay lip service to the ideals at best, then go right on trying to work out how to get the biggest slice of pie for themselves justifying it by claiming 'well everyone else is doing it so...'

Point out the hypocracy of making such claims and... well you can see for yourself what happens by just 5 minutes skimming through the posts on this site.

You know right from wrong, never said you didn't.

My point is you gave up and elected to join those you see doing wrong - then lambast anyone with 'self righteous BS' for pointing out your hypocracy.

^^ apply the above quote to any senate hearing on banking manipulation. You're a true prodigy Reno.

Incidently, what makes you assume I don't work hard?

I just don't gamble on cheap credit, getting others to pay off my investments and leaning on the gubmint to bail me out when I make a bad bet.

    Yes, I'm angry.

    'nouse'?

You confuse the word with integrity I think.

No, what I'm saying is that I refuse to participate in the ponzi which gave people like you an easy path to wealth.

I want a home to live in.

You want a home(s) to get wealthy from.

There's a hell of a lot of 'stupid' money that rode the wave to riches under a protected government monopoly scheme. Australia is littered with examples of people who were ignorant (or too greedy) to be concerned with risk to spin the wheel in the rigged casino and win the jackpot.

As far as I can recall, you had a number of businesses before you settled on being a property investor. Strange how your core is now based on that little slice of pie the gubmint guaranteed you would win on as your bread and butter.

Don't be so quick to judge - you probably have 30 years on this little black duck. I'm just not as reckless as to go borrow until my arse bleeds to be a property genius like you and form up the bottom rung of the property ponzi.

I'm debt free and have a small PM holding derived purely from my own effort.

    I'd hardly call that 'failure'

You made your choice and now look to shrug off the accusation of hypocracy with 'you're just jealous'

How many times have we heard that from wealthy property investors over the years I wonder?

You are right Reno, we are different.

It's just a shame you will never truly appreciate why.

You might have built up a nice little empire there in property sourced from cheap credit and government protection to live out your days as the master of lice on humanity, but it still won't change the fact you sold out your integrity and ideals to get there.

You took the time and effort to post an angry thread on SS talking about Australia being rip off central, but see your efforts at a rentier capitalist as the derivative of 'hard work and effort' and woe be to those who'd dare question the hypocracy of your attitude.

But as always, it comes down to the same old 'my investment dick is bigger than your investment dick so I win' fundamentals with you.

    So what's new here?

    Nothing.

I did consider that exact saying when deciding for myself to stop getting worked up about things anymore... Not overly worrying yourself and doing something are not mutually exclusive; you just dont need to kill yourself over doing something.

One thing that will stick with me is something that a Navy chaplain once said to me, a little story. I am in no way religious, but at the time I had gone to him just for someone to talk to. I was getting rather worked up by a situation outside of my control, and it was impacting my life rather negatively.

This isnt word for word, and I dont know exactly where it came from, but you should get the idea:

A soldier was manning the walls of a city one night during a large celebration. In the distance he spied an army approaching, that seemed to have obvious intentions of beseiging the city. He performed his duty and sounded the horn. The people of the town, engaged in frivolities completely ignored the warning. The soldier tried and tried and tried to get the peoples attention, to get them to react and do something, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. He was anguished, he didnt know what to do. Eventually, he decided to leave before the town was destroyed as he had no chance to stop the advancing army on his own. He saved himself and the few people who would listen to him. He felt as if he had 'sinned' leaving the other townsfolk to their doom, and sought forgiveness.

He was granted forgiveness, because he had done his duty, and sounded the alarm. He had tried to warn them, but it was up to them to listen.

Hahaha borrow till my butt bleeds & master of lice on humanity thanks aus you made my day . You ever thought about being a comedian ?

Yes your right i have had a few different businesses & worked many long hours to be able to be in the position im in now . Have you put your own money on the line to have a go ? NO !!! thats the key difference here . Whil you whinge & whine others work until the early hours of the morning sometimes to make it succeed not you your too busy playing computer games & posting on internet forums .

FYI i have only had 1 home loan remember that ONE so all your insinuations that i bled the system dry for every penny i could & participated in the ponzi endlessly are wrong . I have used my own money since i paid the first one off . You see just when you think you know what your talking about it is all wrong . thinking i built it up on cheap credit ..If you think credit is so cheap get some & try to pay off a 6 figure sum . You really have no idea ......at all.!!!! Your all just smoke & mirrors on your soap box .

Now for the integrity part . My integrity is still in tact always has been always will be .
Ive said it before i think you need to take a long hard look in the mirror. To suggest my integrity is shot to shit because i had ONE home loan is ludicrous & yours is somehow in your skewed world any better is just waffle. What planet are you on ....earth calling pluto

It really has nothing to do with whos investments are bigger . I have the same respect for people that have tried & failed that i have for those that have succeeded . My lack of respect for you is you have never tried & just put crap on those that do .

I mentioned in our last discussion the day you tell us about how you ACTUALLY tried & put up some cash & succeeded or failed it might change but as far as im concerned your just another brick in the wall

Not to be Frivolous regarding your point, but if Reno was the soldier in this story - he wouldn't have left the city and saved himself running away - he'd have joined the oncoming army to partake in the spoils to come, then demanded you respect his decision to do so.

    That's my point.

Reno wants to you all to believe he's a swell guy because he decided not to fight the system, but join it.

He took the easy way out and has the shits because people like myself refuse to do the same with the ultimate arguement being that the ends justify the means.

Screw that. I stand for something more.

He laughs a lot at the frustration of other people, then wants to make the claim he's just one of the boys and you can be just like him if you learn to be a fiscal genius working the financial system.

But if you don't sell him cheap grog? Well, you're just a corrupt exploiting bastard, aren't you?

    What a fucking hypocrite.

As for my family begging on the street in a vain attempt to provoke fear for NOT capitulating, I'll take my chances thanks.

You can lead a successful and fulfilling life financially and morally without resorting to selling out other people and for all your pathetic taunting, my wife and kids are doing just fine thanks without being the bitch of the banks or ripping off other people to make a living.

I'm not buying your jive talk man, so quit preaching.

Well you have sounded the horn repeatedly on what you consider to be his morally bankrupt behaviour. You have performed your duty, the ball is now in everyone elses court... its up to them whether they listen or not, or if they even care.

In my experience people are moral because they can afford to be moral. People in Australia can talk about morality even less privellaged ones as there are safety nets built for Australian citizens. Try talking morality to poor people from asia and africa who are dying of starvation and living in filth. i bet they wont even give it a second thought. so be thankful we are in a country where we are privellaged enough to concern ourselves with our perceived moral issues.

    i skipped some of those stages. I went from;

Frustration/Anger (this led me to stack, save and live with caution)
    to
Frustration/Acceptance (This led me to spend more and enjoy life)

I just now realise there is nothing you can do to change the way things are. The only thing worse then governments are people and nether can ever be changed. I just now accept that my way of thinking is always going to be strange to most people. So now i just live my life and let the people live theirs. I guess if things could change and the world could be perfect, then there would be no need for heaven or higher level of existence.

My shower curtain is not long enough.

Should I sew some more on the bottom?

Or should I put another set of rings at the top?

I dunnoh Hem9. I've been to some pretty dirty impoverished places and was amazed at the honour people there live by. Just like here, there are people in their community that lie cheat and steal but they are always a minority. Even starving...these people wouldn't steal food from their neighbour...they would rather die than live with the shame.

Morality is a choice... I believe it is inate in all of us... it doesn't have to be taught... we have to learn to ignore it. Most of us don't...some of us do.
