So, as I will be buying primarily gold soon... and not wanting to go full ounces just yet...

    1/10oz or 1/4oz?

Or, would I be best getting a mixture of both...

    I don't think you can get a 7/20oz coin. :|

If choosing between 1/10 and 1/4 oz only, I prefer 1/4 oz, basically because of the lower preimum vs higher gold content and decent size.

Of course there are many would suggest diversify :)

1/4 is tiny, I wouldn't want anything smaller in a coin shape. Anything smaller may as well be a blob of metal.

Are you going for the high premium stuff or just thinking about getting the most bang for your buck?

I just got my first 1/4 gold coins, Maples, for that price I would have liked 'em even bigger!

IMO buy silver now and when the ratio contracts swap some over for gold.

    Bang for buck for sure.

I was tempted to hold off and buy only 1oz gold to keep premiums as low as possible cos those 1/10's have big premiums.

I would. Have you considered mini-allocated or non allocated? Gold Pelican was offering something along those lines. might be a goer!

well gold is near its all time highs and and silver isn't near its 1980 high and there is, in my mind no chance of silver not reaching 50 again unless gold doesn't get any large gains either, and if that is the case the bull market should be coming to an end which we know it's not?

I like both so I'd suggest a mix also consider 5 and 10 gram perth mint bars they're de-lish! ;)

If you want low premium yet big enough to 'feel', go for Sovs or Ducats. They aren't .999 Gold but they are 'larger' and usually have lower premiums while still being relatively affordable.

1 Ducat is .1106 AGW which is around 1/10oz.

I suggest 1/2oz is the smallest to go for. The 1/4 & 1/10oz's are way too small. If you have a chance to do so, I suggest to have a look at them size by side.

Or go with ducats or roosters they're not as thick but bigger around!

IMO nothing smaller than 1/4 ounce unless part of a set. This is for bullion coins and not ones with numi value... but that is a whole different ball game.

I have a soft spot for $200 gold coins :)

but out of 1/4oz or 1/10oz, id go 1/4oz due to lower premium

I wouldn't suggest buying under 999 purity gold (or silver)

I like the Sovs, the only time I can think that these would not be any good is for taxing, some countries don't charge tax for gold bullion but they do for the alloys. Not sure on Australia.

I've personally never considered the 1980 'high' as data that is valid.
It was a cornering of the market.

    I do 'LOVE' the Ducats.

But I am in the same frame of mind as Yippe on this, if it's not 999+ purity, I just don't think it'll go as well when selling.
