neither do i. but i live there.. so its either that or go round smelling like a hobo. ok so the silver is 925 chains bought from trusted sellers. they turn blue black in the first few days of being in perth. and if i stop wearing them they start turning gold tone. if i wear them away from perth they clean up. but not if it has gone completely gold tone.
What may I ask are the TDS and EC test sample of the water? Total Disolved Solids and Electrical Conductivity, in the USA, the EPA does not recommend drinking if over 500 ppm. The more solids and EC of the solids can cause Electrolysis, you would know if it was iron for it would oxidize and your shower and sinks would stain to rust. Are there any smells associated w/ the water?
no idea. but there is alot of copper calcite and rust on the water fittings. water tastes like iron and smells like sulfur.
last year i went to perth for the first time and stayed there for 1 week. when i got back to sydney i considered myself malnourished because i did not get use to drinking the tap water in perth so i simply avoided as much as possible. i find the water in sydney, at least the east side, to be sweeter and drinkable. the only good thing about perth is cold showers. in sydney you have to wait for the hot water to get hot. in perth you have to wait for the cold water to get cold lol.
Sulfur is the most likely answer. Tarnish is silver sulfide formed in the reaction between silver and hydrogen sulfide: 2 Ag + H2S ----> Ag2S + H2. Sulphides in Perth drinking water is a widely known problem (as well as dissolved iron). The odour you smell, variously described as "swampy", "sewage" or "cooked vegetable" is caused by the formation of sulfides in Perth drinking water distribution systems. This problem is due to some sources of groundwater in Perth, and the subsequent treatment process.
does sulfur turn silver gold? i know it turns it blue all the way to black. but gold tone? and i describe perth water as liquid brimstone. to those who have never been there.
The color of the toning on silver is dependent on the grade of silver and any alloying metals, and also of how advanced and thick the film of toning is. Early toning on silver coins is yellow, with the colors progressing to magenta (purplish red) to cyan (greenish blue) to black. The color results from "thin film refraction".
I read that one third of Perth water is derived from the underground aquifer, one third from the desalination plant and the other third from dams. As there is a lot of sulphur in underground water (as well as iron), I would say that is the reason. I recently went to Perth and refused to drink it even in tea, I bought bottled water!
i drink bottled water as well dont know what they be putting in the public water supply.. and when i say gold tone its not that yellow toning on coins. its more the iron layer you get on natural quarts crystals before they are acid washed. the blue sulfide layer washes off to reveal it.
Yup, Perth water is kinda icky (though perfectly safe I'm sure). Best water among the capital cities is probably Canberra, with Melbourne not far behind. Brisbane's used to be awful (like 10+ years ago), but has improved a lot. Sydney's is decent. Adelaide's has also historically been quite bad but I think is a lot better now. Can't comment on Hobart or Darwin - haven't been there My guess is, given the climate, Hobart water is probably great.
Perth Water, my favourite subject. The TDS readings at my spot are between 400 and 440 with a ph of 7.9 at 27 degrees C. Since installing my reverse osmosis (RO) system with mineral and alkalising filters my TDS is now between 28 and 38 with a ph of 9.65. You cannot believe how nice the water tastes. The family loves it. The TDS would be lower if not for the mineral filter which infuses the water with some of the good minerals that the RO filter has stripped out. Also installed a few other bits and bobs that are supposed to re-energise the water. Other than Gold and Silver this was the next best investment that I have done in recent times. I have pre-sediment filter which I change out every 3 months or so, and its as brown as the iron ore WA ships to China - unreal
