This is very similar to RAM kangaroos, certain years seem to be more popular than others. Look at what the later years are selling for compared to the earlier ones and quite a difference in the mintages too.
I would have bought from the golstackers webpage but like KJC you must buy a minimum of 20 (1 roll) eg. their 1998 Kookaburra is minimum of 20 coins, and when you just want a few odd years to complete a set, buying 20 is irrelevant.
Looks like it was set to a minimum of 20 on 1997 and 1998 - been fixed. We sell any Kookaburra in stock in singles.
If you can find out the original mintages before the restriking it might give you a clue as to why their premiums were so high. If a year had only 80,000 minted versus another year of 150,000 then you'd suggest the 80k would be the rarer and hence higher premium. I would say that the restriking has taken the wind out of the Kookaburra's sail for any kind of numismatic premium. I have just one of each year and no more, just as a keepsake, not an investment. The restrikes are about $37 ea and with spot silver at $30 or so, thats spot +$7 or about 23%. In my view, they don't warrant that premium above spot. Their premium should really be no more than 5 or 10% given they have been restruck and from 2013 onwards 1 million produced.
5-10% would put the price below wholesale, let alone retail. Even ASEs in a 500oz monster box sell for ~15% over spot.
uuuuuuuumm Did you work-out what to buy? I was thinking that maybe the dies Perth used, might need cleaning since they have been in storage for a very long time. I'm pretty sure the dies are made of hardened steel, but unless they are well cared for thier could be pitting or other minor imperfections especially on the older ones from the 90's. Perhaps a particular "year-of-dies" have been damaged which could cause some variation in the re-strikes compared to the original strikes. Perhaps the dies that didn't strike a large mintage (Example 2006) are in better condition???? I suppose time will tell. :| H
haven't you noticed that more and more older dates MS70 kooks on ebay? I guess no problem with the dies
Question was put to the mint about the dies when the first 1992 restrikes were done - they are being minted either from original dies, or new dies made from the original hobs. Takes more than one die set to mint 300,000 coins, so new dies would most likely eventually be required during the restrikes.
haven't decided yet holdfast, but leaning towards 2002, see what happens waiting on some cash as brought a bit of gold
