Long term issues...just think about Chernobyl.. and Chernobyl was a "baby" compare to what happened in Japan...
It really is a frightening prospect. Whilst the criminally negligent politicians fart about with a carbon tax, we are killing our food production (Fukishima is emptying into the sea and a giant radioactive blob is bulging out toward USA. Ditto the intentional poisoning by BP to try and quell the public relations disaster of their oil pipe bursting. (anyone for fish with black lesions growing on them - don't worry they cut off the black bits before they can it for you). The consequences of greed are much extensive than a few fat cat bankers and corrupt politicians. Modern day greed without moral hazard has the potential to take us back to the stone age.
Here it is: http://allenlrolandsweblog.blogspot.com/2012/05/fukushima-primed-for-worldwide-disaster.html Fukishima Image: Source: Spread Looking this up I realised that we are talking about ELEVEN MONTHS of fiddling while this reactor burns, IN A CYCLONE AND EARTHQUAKE ZONE! Get on to your members of parliament and start asking questions. This is a global disgrace.
JulieW..Thanks for posting these images..At least we are not in the dark here on SS. Every nation on earth should be pouring help into Fukushima before its too late! I can hear the politicians now, its easy now in hindsight. If we had known, we would have done something about it. Here in Australia, we argue about Unions, taxes and Speakers while Fukushima could exterminate many species in our oceans and even humans. Great work JulieW. Regards Errol 43
To give the Japanese credit where it's due, as of last month no nuclear plants are operating within the country at all now. They've shut the lot down. They're pretty ticked off that the safety and contingency procedures installed by GE when the plants were built, before the Japanese had any nuclear experience, proved to be insufficient, and they just don't trust the reactors commisioned by the Americans to withstand major disasters any more. Meanwhile their wild/solar/wave motion technology is moving ahead as fast as they are able, given their own financial problems.... In the meantime, I guess it's back to coal... But Fukushima Daiichi, yeah, it's going to take a while.
For anyone who hasn't heard of/read the Fukushima Diaries read this: http://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/robotics/industrial-robots/fukushima-robot-operator-diaries They make an interesting (if scary) read.
Well its not only the Fukushima nuclear disaster that will detroy the Japanese economy. According to this article, they are already in terminal decline and nothing can save them from sliding further from economic prominence. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/eo20120502a1.html
A race of people as clever and community minded as the Japanese will find a way to come through this.
