We might be at the start of years and years of economic stagnation but you don't need to worry about there being no food in the shops beyond what any normal natural disaster likely in your area might dictate.

    Check, check, and check.

    I recently added:

A physical street directory, map and small shovel to keep in the car (along with other essential stuff like a water filter, toilet rolls, etc)

Venezuelans are storming supermarkets and attacking trucks as food supplies dwindle.

This in today's SMH. On iPhone if someone can reference it and a synopsis.

It just shows that it is all possible.

I'm expecting a strategic miscalculation, or an accidental military engagement instigated by a junior officer, in the South China Sea. While this is unlikely to lead to full scale war, it will certainly lead to a major chilling of relations, a large increase in military spending, and a global recession.

You would need cable ties and a bag of lime to go with the shovel

Also useful for camping and pottering around the garden.

The one I have (pictured above) is ok for keeping in the car but too heavy to carry IMO in a real survival situation. It's just a simple, solid shovel.

    Some other uses:

    Tick tick tick
Have a similar shovel there except with long handle , very handy . Cyclone brand is preferable
An axe rather than hatchets is preferable... Also have a chain saw
Spare towels and clothing just in case. Some warm cloths are standby as well

I didn't think about spare towels. Good tip.

Spare underwear and socks are really great to have too.

Matches, torch, knife, blankets, ropes can be useful too.
Maybe put all this as a kit, beside the other things that have been mentioned.

Still debating a full-sized axe vs. a hatchet. How about a solid hatchet with maybe a 40 or 50cm handle?

The silver head on the axe blunts too quickly.

I bought a Fiskars everyday axe (70cm handle) last year. Use it as everything from a hatchet to a log splitter. bit pricey but excellent multipurpose design and seems to be keeping an edge for ever.
