What are the odds of these fakes being passed off as the real thing here in oz? Has anyone got one yet?

I'd venture to suggest you won't see one coming from any of the site sponsors who are all excellent and trustworthy folk to deal with.

Purchasing from other major bullion dealers should also be good.

Any private sale (E-Bay, Gumtree to name a few) you'll have a chance to find the scam artists selling these sorts of things. Read any advertisement carefully - these folks, whilst crazy, aren't stupid, and the ad will most of the times be very carefully worded to cover their keester in case of a dispute. Terms such as "German Silver" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_silver), "Mills", which means 1/10 gram... the list goes on!

Ali Baba is basically a wholesalers version of ebay. Not surprising to see all that stuff on there.

That 1oz Palladium Bar would be interesting to see in personal. Especially where they say they can alter the thickness to customers request as well as plating to customers request. You could ask for one to be 1oz in weight and plated with Palladium.

The XRF would be fooled if the plating was thick enough, as well as the scales, even the magnet depending on the alloy. You can't use a ultrasound through the pack so would be interesting.

Be worth noting that PAMP are changing their serial numbers over now on all the small bars to laser engraved not the machine drilled anymore. Also wont be long until the magnetic strips are going into the packages as well so you can scan the packs.

Other brands are also putting laser engraved QR codes directly onto the bar that will authenticate back at the suppliers database. Also packaging with RFID in on the table.

The new security measures coming out will slow down good counterfeits but you will loose a bit more of the anonymity in owning the metal depending which way they go with it.

Unless your ready AND Able for the burglar and friends

Or if you are not a hit em harder think smarter guy like me....you could move and you still have your real stash.

    Bury it under the chook shed....d e e p

Most people don't think much about security until after the event. Get your security sorted and you will deter 90%+

Have an extra internal alarm that cannot be disabled from the outside. External and internal cctv etc sorted!

    ALL Burglars should be castrated

Decided to add to this instead of starting a new thread.

I am very new to buying precious metals outside gold jewellery shops, so these came as a shock. Now I'm not sure if I should continue my search for some peso earrings... :( (The first one looks really nice though)

    One of my golden rules:
If the deal is too good to be true, I stay away from it regardless how "attractive" the asking price is.

Are they fakes in genuine packaging? Do they look tampered with?
If it's fake packaging, when actually holding the item, how likely is the packaging to fool a buyer?
Your photos suggest that these wouldn't be hard to use to fool almost anyone.

They are genuine fake.... Perfect knock off.
    Similar packaging, approximately same weight.

The difference the bar are slightly bigger or thicker.
    Can FOOL untrained eyes.

    Apparently, come from eBay

    Another classical example.

With the good fake gold bars in cards it makes me wonder why anyone in their right mind would ever buy a 1 oz gold bar just to save a few bucks of premium. The 1 oz gold coins from gov mints are faked too but they are easy to spot due to the artwork, etc, where the bars are pretty easy to fake well.

One of my local guys sells scratched/scruffy gold maples for the same price (or less) as new bars. If I was really a cheapo on premiums I would take the scruffy coin over the bar for the same price and know my coin was real albeit scruffy.

    Just my opinion.
