Misplaced hysterics by some aside, this is a very relevant post on a number of levels. Thanks for posting it.

Give them 25.4 mm and they take a Kilometer.

The Australian Securities and Investment Commission has called for sweeping powers so it can access phone call and internet data for its war on white-collar crime.

Not only does the authority want the powers to intercept the times, dates and details of telecommunications information; it also wants to access the contents of emails, social media chats and text messages.

This is more power than the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation have sought to assist the crime agencies in investigating terrorism and murder suspects.

^ I see it as the olden days equivalent of opening everyone's mail in the post office, checking your mailbox every day, interrogating your postie and checking to see how many stamps you buy. Then they go into your house and read the letters you're writing, possibly change them, force you into telling them what you were going to write, etc.

Historically it would have been considered impossible for such things to happen under a democracy.

    That's progress for ya.

Yeah. I've been reading a book about the olden days. Apparently in the times of the Sun King (Louis the XIV for the forgetful or most of 1600's to early 1700's for the non-historical buffs :p ) essentially all mail (but particularly between the nobles) was intercepted and read with obviously important/incriminating stuff copied before delivery. He had cryptographers to crack any ciphers and (apparently) played an important role in his machinations as one could easily imagine.

Sounds like those people needed a good dose of Democracy and a Privacy Act - that way they would have been protected from such things :p
