funny you mention that. I just stacked up some 50,20,10 and 5 cent coins on my desk 5 minutes ago..$15 worth....I just began.

Intelligencer is the man you want to speak with, he knows a lot about this.

These coins are made from copper/nickel. The $1 and $2 coins are made from aluminum and some other metal, these are not worth hording.

5 cent pieces should be discontinued soon, maybe within a couple of years I dont know. The 10 and 20 cent pieces wont be far behind.

you want to collect 5, 10 and 20 cent coins yet with the 50 cent coins you want to change them further as they are more than double the price of the 20 cent coin yet hold the approx the same metal content.

Yes I'd say so. Metal prices only go one way longterm......UP.

Of course youd be better off putting these coins into Silver instead but the idea isnt to get rich off these, its just to create another pile of money for a rainy day.

    noob question here?

once the metal prices go up and beyond the face value of the 5, 10, 20 cents, and the government starts to recall all of these and print out alloy metal eqauls..

whats the best way to make money out of them later on...

Keep them for 20 years+ then sell them in bags or individually depending on how much they are worth. Ebay if its still around or wherever.

Look at what 1 & 2 cent coins are going for on ebay... not to mention base metal coins like pennies etc....

wow I thought <sobs> I was the only one! My girl thought I was mental, and maybe I am. It when you spot a 10c piece and grab it for the stash, crying Hey, that worth almost ten cents! that you start to wonder. It definitely a long play and maybe like someone else was saying, in 1966 you would have been better off spending your round fifties because of the meat pie ratio or whatever.
But I am just starting out on the stacking hobby and am starting to appreciate coins, and metals in general. It real money and storage is an issue but they are easy to spare. Well, that my 5c worth.

Steel is also going up, Should go to the mechanics and hoard disk brakes.

In my opinion, the metal in those coins is not precious, these would never be sold for spot.

    Anyone with other thoughts?

Well as pointed out just above, copper coins are now selling on a spot basis. I believe NZ has already had to switch to steel coins because of the intrinsic value of cupronickel exceeding face value.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't it be illegal to destroy the coins by melting them?

Perhaps I mistakenly assumed collecting coins based on their "melt value" would some how lead to them being melted.

you dont have to melt coins.....the round 1966, pre-decimals....or even current copper/nickle as they have already been assayed.....just dont hand them back to the gubberment....they will always trade for spot as its wieght and purity are know/.....

though for my 2cents I would say down the track the powers that be will demonise stackers as hoarders and againts the National interest.....Silver for one would be first cab off the rank as its used by the military..
