I apologise if this is not the correct board, if this discussion is not allowed please delete this, but you all know me, not a troll Anyway I was driving today and accidentally went through a red light I think. My sister thinks she saw a flash In 4 years of driving I've only ever gotten one speeding ticket. I'm just wondering say we have 12 points and we have lost 6 for example, we have 6 left. But how do we gain/replenish points? I can't seem to find any info. After tonight I may only have 6 points left and kinda worried now since no car = no job. How long do you have to drive without any penalties in order to receive some points back? I live in SA... Thanks.
Unlikely you'll lose 6. Maybe 2 or 3 i reckon. After a couple of years you should get your points back.
Ok thanks. Well I think I've lost 1 in the past and then if I was caught tonight its 3 more gone so I should have 8 left. But I hope to god I wasn't speeding through that red light...I don't think so. The $500+ fine is gonna suck... I mean a $100 fine would be just as effective...wouldnt it
I wouldn't worry other than to warn that across the nation, State Governments are putting the pressure on their police to raise as much revenue as they can through fines. They are tightening the noose, rolling out unmarked cars, speed camera vans/utes etc and putting up new digital redlight/speed cameras (as opposed to the old film cameras) in intersections everywhere. For S.A., Your demerit points incured take 3 years to clear. Once you incur 6 demerit points within 3 years...you get a warning letter. 12 to 15 points you lose your right to drive for three months 16 to 20 points you lose your right to drive for four months more than 20 points you lose your right to drive for five months. http://www.sa.gov.au/subject/Transp...Driving+offences+and+penalties/Demerit+points
Unfortunately it only deters law abiding citizens; the people who flout the road laws will continue to drive even without their drivers license.
Ever seen someone run a red light, and T bone another car? My sister was in the fire brigade here. Her unit attended one such case. She couldn't handle the shock herself from the carnage she saw, and quite her position. So are you trying to sell a sob story that your gunna loose $500 because you are in the wrong? Mate if you did run that red light! "Then U deserve it." Slow down......Spend your silver profits when you are old.
Thanks I saw that page earlier. So this 3 year thing can you clarify. Do I need to be completely clean for 3 years to get my points back. Or do you mean whatever points I lost in 2011 I gain back 3 years from that date. But the points that I lost today would take 3 years from today? I'm guessing thats what you mean :/
I don't think thats completely fair. It depends how late you where. It's not like I purposely went through a red light that was red for a while. It was like 1 second too late. It posed no danger at all. I'm not complaining about being fined, but $500+ is not right. Most people who get caught are not trouble makers and it was an accident, it's not done on purpose. I fail to see how a $100 fine (compared to a $500 fine) would be less effective in stopping red light runners. It's pure revenue raising.
Misconceptions about here. Mostly they have nothing to do with the Police. Speed camera vans here in NSW are actually operated by a subsidiary of Macquarie Bank under state govt licence - Not the Police. Fixed cameras are run by Roads ministries - not Police. Unmarked cars - Yes Police but the fines for catching an unregistered car being driven (again in NSW) are apparently over $1000. I'm sure they'd prefer to catch unreg rather than 14km over the limit...
Mate. 1 second too late! Your well over the white line. Lights don't go from green to red without warning.......What! fair' I have enjoyed your posts over the years. I would hate to here that you and your sister is not with us anymore! Cop it on the chin mate if they sting you for it, and learn to slow down.
I'm pretty sure in NSW it takes 3 years from when you lose a point till it comes back. So 2 points March 2011 and 2 more June 2011 would come back March 2014 and then June 2014. This is how I remember it, probably different in each state.
(Try not to think of them as credits that you lose when in trouble...and it may seem easier) Yes, If you earn 3 points in 2011 you won't lose them until 2014. If you earn another 3 points in 2012...you won't lose them until 2015...but you have subsequently just earned 6 demerits within a 3yr period (2 years to be exact). That means you "MAY" get a warning letter telling you you've accumulated 6 demerit points and are at risk of losing your licence.
I've always been more worried about the points than the fine, I think thats the point. I heard somewhere (uh-oh) that over the years the fines have gotten bigger but that the points have gotten smaller. Will have to look that up though.
Pretty sure I saw a page today that said from Sep 2012, points/fines have increased. Besides the fine for the lowest penalty (speeding under 10KM's over the limit has nearly halved which is good (but has increased from 1 to a 2 point loss.
