...that there will only be 500,000 1oz Kookaburras minted in 2013, not the originally declared 1,000,000, and the new lower mintage is already 97% sold out. Future mintages in years to come will also remain at 500,000. Kooks just got added to the endangered species list Actually it's official news - it was announced to distributors today.
I think the 1oz Koala was just unsuspended as well - to be confirmed. edit - confirmed, the 1oz Koalas have been removed from temporary suspension, and will start flowing again.
Official - Perth Mint Blog 1oz Australian Kookaburra Mintage Declared At 500,000 In a move I'm sure will please fans of our annual Australian Kookaburra 1oz silver bullion coin, the mintage of this year's release has been declared at 500,000. As you will recall, we previously announced that the 2013 issue would be the first in the program's 23 year history to have a maximum mintage of 1 million double the limit for the 2012 release, which sold out. http://www.perthmintbullion.com/Blog/au/Blog.aspx
Which business can afford to piss $20 million in sales up against the wall? It's a silver shortage. You heard it here first!
No way they were going to make the 1 million mintage, and (a mild) revolt against the higher mintage by silver stackers. Unrelated to any shortages of silver, guaranteed. The number of sales would have been greatly affected by decision to remint earlier years kookaburras, I would guess a lot were reminted, although I am sure the stats are available somewhere. I figure it is a backflip due to above reasons. Although without the remints next year very likely we see a very early sellout and high premiums on kookaburra 2014. You can still order $20 million worth of koalas if you want to.
Why care about a minor revolt by the stackers. It is a commercial operation, they are doing their shareholders a disservice by limiting sales. It's a Silver Shortage. You heard hear again.
Bullion is best bang for buck. Cheaper to buy bars than coins. Mintage figures are just numbers. Ounces in hand win the game.
Depends when you buy them! Modern bars like the 10oz and Kilo bars don't have numismatic value, coins do. Example 1/2oz Lunar Ox 1oz Lunar Ox 2oz Lunar Ox 2oz - 2008 Mouse 5oz - 2008 Mouse 10oz- 2008 Mouse 1oz - 2008 Kookaburra 2oz - 2008 Kookaburra 2oz - 2009 Kookaburra 2oz - 2010 Lunar Tiger 5oz - 2010 Lunar Tiger 5oz- 2011 Lunar Rabbit 10oz - 2011 Lunar Rabbit Etc, etc, etc! Buying bullion bars might be cheaper than coins, but modern bullion coins can appreciate to be future collectables. Check any of the bullion coins in the above list and they absolutely smash any silver bullion bars. H
2010 silver tiger. 2oz 5oz 1/2 oz Got some of each. Put out some for sale on SS ( mainly 5oz) Got response with bids of spot + a little bit. They are the only (part) of my stack that are numis. Mainly bought in due to hype. Happy to keep full year type sets for handing down to children. My reasoning is buy & forget & dig up in a few years & not get caught up in trading. To each their own...
Scottsdale just increase their wholesale premiums again US$5.25 premium above spot for ASE Minimum order is 500ozs of silver
