Yep, keep your gold at home... I'm sick of the banks and private vaults accidentally throwing away my gold.

    Yep, silly silly.
My Grandad hit the panic button when his garage was robbed. They took his guns from the cupboard but left the $100,000 that was in the cornflakes box next to them.
When we knew that he stored things this way we made sure we weent through everything very carefully before throwing things away when he died.

It's not the first time this sort of thing has happened though - there was a case in Melbourne only a year or two ago where a wife donated a suitcase to the Salvos that contained something like $140k in cash that the husband was hiding in it (who would steal an old suitcase, right?) - the couple that bought it from the Salvos for $2 were eventually charged with something along the lines of unlawful enrichment for not returning the cash when they discovered it.

Point is - store metal at home, and it's susceptible to loss, whether it's flood, fire, theft, naughty kids or a moment of forgetfulness. Particularly if you're stashing things in "plain sight" - there's a trend forming where it gets thrown out by mistake :/

If I ever accidently throw away my safe which is bolted to the floor you have permission to mock me repeatedly.

    I agree this was idiotic.

I had this problem potentially when my stack was smaller and I stored stuff at home.

Nowadays all I ever have to worry about is a deep 7+ Richter scale earthquake that flattens buildings and basements in Brisbane CBD and then I'd probably still get my stuff back after several weeks or months.

Am I the only one who agonises about throwing anything out and checks meticulously before finally getting around to it?

This reminds me of the people who booby trap their homes against intruders, they generally end up shooting themselves. Storing anything in a cerael box is just silly.

My brother-in-law apparently hid some banknotes in the pages of a book to keep it safe, not much, a couple of hundred but needless to say he doesn't know which book and he has moved several times since then.

I won a book from Ebay, it was from a second hand book clearing charity so I have no idea who donated it.

It was a book produced by the Liberty Dollar Founder and neatly pressed between the leaves was a $50 Proof Silver Certificate. I am not sure if the book came with the certificate as part of the promotional value or whether a collector had bought them at the same time but I now have it. No actual silver was redeemeable and as the FBI has it all anyway the owner didn't loose out but it is a welcome addition to my collection of Liberty Dollar Certificates.

It doesn't really matter where you hide the gold/silver, thefts now-a-day also carry a metal detector with them.

Sure are plenty of stupid people out there throwing away their jewelry. My Boss (knowing I follow PM's) enthusiastically told me he & his wife took some old gold jewelry into a goldbuyers on the weekend and got $19 per gramme for their gold.

I looked at him blankly (he's a really bright guy, but sometimes does some astronomically stupid things). Rather than chastise him I just showed him yesterday's gold spot price of $55/gm!

    Moral of the story:

Don't throw anything out ever, keep hoarding it till your house explodes.

I thought the moral was, if you're an idiot you'll always be an idiot regardless of what you do.

    Really??

wow - i somehow cant imagine a group of scumbags coming into my house - armed with knives - and one of them carrying a metal detector...

If that were the case, i'd definately have to say the bull run has definately ended!

I'd have to say the moral of the story is to check everything twice before binning it!
