    Greens senator Bob Brown resigns

Bob Brown has resigned as leader of the Australian Greens party.

The 67-year-old senator has announced he will also resign from the Senate, after 16 years' service, when his replacement is available in June.

Australian Greens Deputy Leader Christine Milne will replace the 67-year-old in the top job after being elected unanimously by the party room.

"I'm 67 and I'm aware that one should always make room for renewal in politics."

"Mr Brown said he looked forward to bushwalking, photography and travel during his retirement."

Mr Brown, when did you realise you were 67?

Thank christ, now we just need to get rid of the Ranga and that budgy smuggler and we will be right :)

Actually I think we need to start our own party, Silver Stackers Party = SSP.

CC/GW has peaked and it's all downhill from here. Especially as the over-indebted western world starts to run out of money.

Never let it be said that he doesn't have some smarts...

Christine Milne is not exactly the most charismatic politician either. She looks like she sucks lemons all day long.

I expect the Greens to lose around 4-5% at the next election.

I agree with "Peter". Bob was the only one who would tell the truth. The others all create spin, lies and can't give you a straight answer.

I liked it when Bob stood up in parliament and gave it to George W Bush. I also liked that Bob would go and meet constituants FTF in logging and mining electrorates, he had balls.

Call me Johnny come lately if you must but I happen to think that Senator Brown was one of the few people in Australian politics you could depend upon to do what he said he'd do. Now I'm no Greenie. Far from it. They have policies that I'm inflexible on aka firearms and as such I'd never, ever vote for them

He still wanted to tell other people what to do ( and thought he had the right to do so) just as much as the other politicians do and that puts him in the same boat for me.

That's pretty funny, it's very easy to stand your ground and put on a good show when your not actually in Government and don't have to follow through on election promises or policies...

The filthy commie media whore used to take advantage of every shooting tradgedy around the world to push his flawed anti-gun ideology and flying out to mining communities to tell them their jobs were safe despite the core agenda of the greens being to shutdown mining in Australia - nah, that's not lies and spin...

You obviously never saw the silly poof being shredded by Kerry O'brian on the ABC either...

It's easy to tell if a politician is lying... their lips will be moving! :D

    Shame to see him go.

Whether or not you agreed with his politics, at least he didn't tell lies to get elected. He was upfront with his agenda and you either agreed with it or you didn't.

There's maybe half a dozen politicians left in parliament (on all sides) with that kind of integrity.

I'm not going to comment on whether he was honest or not but it's clear to me at any rate people don't want honest politicians. Why would they? Politics is a zero-sum game.

People want the one's who look nice and tell them, convincingly, what they want to hear. The truth tellers and obvious liars are chased and hounded out of town. I put Gillard in the obvious liar camp. She's really not very good at it. Rudd was good at lying (and hence liked by many Australians) but it seems like his party just couldn't tolerate him.
