This response from someone over at sigma metalytics. the company that invented those verifiers. It sucks that it woudn't be of help to those collecting highly sought after, rare collectibles. since they're using the real thing, but making it look old. In this sense, the chinese suck (obviously - to those who it applies). I guess it wouldn't make any sense to make a fake bullion coin out of the real stuff...unless they are stupid...and I wouldn't put it past them. :D

Yeah they could do that, we've seen cases like that, especially with Morgans. Even things like using one face from one coin and the other face from another

Haven't seen gold coins done that way--but possible

Philosophical question: how does an exact replica differ from the original?

The crony capitalists can't get the grubbmint to enforce their "intellectual property" monopoly and therefore can't extort a payment?

I wonder how many of those morgan dollars Monex "found" have been faked?

Thanks! Hearing this only reinforced my opinion why I prefer to only stack bullion bars. I don't like paying premiums.

And you know this is going to become more and more of an issue with the advancements of technology. It really is ashame. I'm seriously considering giving up collectibles altogether, and just stick with low premium, low mintage stuff. You'll either detect a fake, because it is too costly to replicate the real thing with the real thing...that ain't happening. but I can definitely see if a medal or coin that is fetching 2,000 or 5,000 or higher, that they use the real material to replicate the real 'artifact', and no one would know the difference. I mean, they can make the fake thing look as old as the real thing. I'm giving serious consideration to giving up on collecting altogether. And just stick with my go to bullion purchases. oh well.

the funny thing is, I buy chinese medals, thinking they won't be replicating those. LMAO. I've heard the medal. God of War and Wealth is heavily counterfeited, sadly. I heard those things a few years ago went from 160.00 to 2 and 3 thousand, and all of a suddent these thing just magically appeared all over the place at the time. really is horrendous. Even if the dies are destroy, i'm sure they can take the image from the coin/medal, and gather everything the need from that, and presto, out on the other side comes something identical, and in it's 'antique' state. suck me. Back to bullion buying I go. that's where ther verifier will come in handly. they aint' spending money on the real thing to make a fake thing. LOL.

funny, I write back to the sigma metalytics and say, 'I guess the moral of the story is, stay away from collectibles and rarities.' - in reference to the link at the start of this thread, and he responds, 'I agree.' It's too bad that this whole counterfieting thing is going to put a damper on collectors. I guess, a 17.00, the chinese can make some nice PM 2010 silver tigers using the real stuff, and still make a killing...you put it on the scale, it shows real silver. it is real silver. It pings like real silver. It looks like real silver. It is real silver. But it is not minted by the PM. No one knows the difference, except the counterfeiter, because he/she made some good dough. LOL. As long as I get the good stuff at a low cost premium (i.e. 2015's kooks - 18/19), who's complaining. Anyway, I'm going back to my bullion buying. I think the only way around this is what lunar skull goat is doing? COA paper matches the coin COA. But I guess even the chinese can fake that too, right? pretty easy to do...now if you have the same number as somone else...yikes...that may be a problem. LOL>

Personal fabrication technology will render numismatics worth nothing more than the raw materials and the energy used to create them.

No need to mess with those cheap old tigers when there are Superman and Avenger collectibles that are much more profitable.

Ha. I got rid of my avengers. Decided I'm only keeping and buying (future) only those series that have actual signature. At least there will be some value if they make the copies. LOL. Signature is hard to forge. :) The superman I'm keeping. I kept 3, one for each of my kids. I thought I liked the avenger, but the more I thought about the size of that thing, the more I said, no thanks. I only bought one of those bad boys, and that was enough...especially after seeing the size of the package. LOL. The batman silver and gold...with Frank Miller's signature is a keeper, and along with Stan Lee's signature. We'll see how it turns out 10 or so years down the road...paid a hefty premium. :)
