As topics "why kooks more popular than Koala. I personally do not collect both. However, I prefer Koala design.
I have a horny male koala in my backyard at the moment who stays up all night growling. He sounds like a cross between a feral pig and a 400 kilo tiger. If I had some 1oz koalas I'd probably throw them at him. More seriously I think the kooks just took off. The more collectors there are the bigger the market and the bigger the market the more collectors there are. So I suppose they were just picked up first, there really isn't room for two yearly low premium collectibles and the kooks just won out.
Kooks are more collectible because they have limited mintages while the Koalas are unlimited mintage. Also the Kook series has been going around 20 years longer than the Koala.
Limited mintage definitely a factor. And while both can be a bit hit and miss, in more recent years the Perth Mint has managed to produce some terrible, terrible Koala designs..
I agree with many of the prior posts, but just want to add.. The koala, for whatever reason, just isn't as "translatable" as the kook is, from a visual design perspective. Perhaps partly the fur & partly the nose, for examples. I suppose the ears, too. And the whole face. IOW, the real thing just looks better in person, than a more-or-less 2D version stamped on Ag. The kook just works better in that medium. Lots of birds on lots of coins throughout history, for that matter. Perhaps a good reason for that. Also, seems like the Kook gets more focus/attention on better quality control & processes.
All that plus the designs. Like many, I have yet to see a Koala that I find in any way visually appealing.
If Kooks have a limited mintage and Koalas do not but kooks are more popular than koalas this means more kooks get sold than koalas so the limited mintage means nothing because less koalas are minted than kooks If Koalas exceed Kook mintage that means koalas are more popular than kooks
I like the Koala coins. I use to stack kookaburra coins but after looking Perth's mintage policy, I think a mint to order coin is preferable to an unlimited mintage. Sure, one could argue that the 1oz kookaburras have a limited mintage of just 500,000 coins and the coins are generally sold-out but...if for some reason the coins are not sold-out, Perth have the right to mint these coins up to the mintage limit. That could take weeks, months or years which could leave the stacker wondering what the final sales figure will be, 500,000 or maybe declared at a lower figure. Conversely The Koala coins are "Mint To Order" and are only manufactured for 12 months and then the coins are "declared". After 12 months, Perth "declare" the coin which provides stacker's an actual mintage figure. Both 1oz coins are very nice and of course, it's the design that people go for more than the declared mintage figure. Stack both I say. And...if Perth are viewing this thread, bring back the 2oz kookaburra coins or bring us a new 2oz Ag bullion Koala.
There was one older Koala design where it looked like the poor thing had been punched in the face and had a swollen eye. It was kind of sad.
