As I try to complete my collection of the full set of bullion years, one oz kookaburras, I nearly fell of my chair when Apmex relisted this week. The price of the 2008 Kook is more than 4 times that of preceding years like 2006. Is 2008 so much sought after, rarer or what ?
2008 was the first Kook to reach full mintage in it's year of issue (since the original 1990 sellout) - there are no restrikes floating around to fill the gaps in new collections that have just been assembled from restrikes. A brand new "key date". Good news though for Kookaburra collectors that are holding non-restrikes years - the increased supply of restrikes has just created an artificial scarcity of the sold out years that have been diluted amongst existing bullion stacks and coin collections - and bullish for the 2013 release. Note to self - don't sell the roll of 2008s sitting in the vault :/ The 1990 should fetch even higher premiums by that logic.
Apmex prices dont rule my life... take there prices with a grain of salt.. 08s are floating around far cheaper... i agree with GP that thwe 1990 was and is the key date of the set 1for1
Thanks for the info - maybe a dumb question but how can you tell if a Kook from the era 1991 to present date is a restrike if a specific year was restruck ? Is there a small letter stamped on the coin for example ? Also just found a source of 2008 selling at normal price, ordered 5 but thinking I should have bought a roll.
No way to tell, except maybe that some early years came in square capsules and all restrikes are in round capsules.
The 1990 has had many years of low silver prices since release - who knows how many got melted. There may be much less than the original 300K still floating around.
I bid on one recently but didnt win, im in no rush to grab one, but do have a roll of 1991. Who knows if i will keep these for long as i seem to sell when i need money. But they are a key date with the least amount to be restruck - 15k compared to over 100k on some. That auction ended for 53 delivered for free in Aus. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/180929748380?ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1435.l2649
That is good news, looked over my stack and I have 10 of them not a lot but at least they are worth extra.
Just to add that the 1999 and 2000 coins seem to be priced well above the rest. Perhaps worth adding to stack where they can still be bought at a lower price before all the resellers smell the coffee ?
Probably because people see it as an iconic design! Well, at least I do. 2008 GFC being another financial rape year of mankind...... What better design than an orb's spiders web ( representing the world )Being restricted by it's size for freedom of barbed wire! (The filthy bloody banks ) With a perched Kook sporting a great smile, mesmerized with that web of deceit, ready to catch those poor unsuspecting flies.
All the kooks that were fully minted (1990, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) were always going to hold/increase their premium because people couldn't get them to complete their sets of "minty fresh" kooks they had just picked up. You'll also find that the premium for the coins that weren't released in bulk because the mint didn't have any/many in stock have also increased but you need to be careful with these as all it takes is a dealer with deep pockets to get the mint to remint the remaining number of kooks up to 300 000 and then these can be released back to the market - potentially causing a short term decrease in price. malachii
Can get an MS69 graded one on the bay for $99 buyout http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2008-SIL...2588714?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item2c67f3c02a
Is this the same for 1kg kooks? If anyone's interested. I've got two roles of 2009 1oz kooks and might be selling in the next few months.
