Why do some Perth Mint coins have interrupted reeding?

What is the significance of interrupted reeding on some Perth Mint coins? Is it just a design choice? I first noticed it on an older kilo Kook I have but a recent one has continuous reeding all the way around.

Originally it was to prevent clipping/filing down but think it's not for the visually impaired to recognise the coins.
