I know nothing about pre-decimals, so I'm wondering if someone can explain what are the positive points that lead people to stack them over 999 silver or round fifties?

    epic stack!

for me there's a downside. budget storage in somewhere like the reserve vault is not spacious (smallest bullion locker for example @$550 per year / 100kg limit) and therefore demands keeping purity up ..

Easiest and cheapest method of stacking silver on a regular basis.
The cost of a coffee is about the same as a 50% florin.
Anyone can stack silver just by foregoing 1 cup a day.
Don't want to give up your regular coffee; then save a sixpence. Priced at only a dollar it's not going to break the bank.

That would look amazing in an old wooden pirate style chest.

Never thought about stacking them, until I saw that photo.

Cheap if you look around, no need for great care and when sold individually to people that require a certain year then they can turn a great profit.
I just watched 60 X 50% florins go to auction and return $375.......................................
Now i would personally NEVER EVER pay that for them , but people do.
    Yay!!!!!
