sounds the most obsurd question but I suppose we all have our reasons, mine is personally that I have become a you tube dollar junkie in the form of Gerald celeste, peter schif mark keiser ,and all others that are predicting economic turmoil, and the fear of the banks taking some of my money if a situation like Cyprus should happen here in the uk youre covered by a 87000 guarantee should the bank go belly up , but im not convinced that would be the case if a bank wanted to take part of your money I also resent the 1/2%-2% interest im getting
I stack as a savings account with money that would otherwise been pissed up the wall. My savings may grow in value, they may not.
Does the UK government have enough spare cash to honour their guarantee? ...or would they have to print it? Our government certainly does not have ANY spare cash. And as for my reasons, as stated here before, INSURANCE! OC

Insurance. If the AUD tanks then I maintain a level of (international) purchasing power. If it dies I don't get wiped out (which happened to my in-laws). It is a source of savings without the counter-party risk of banks. It is relatively portable in case I decide to relocate.
Undocumented wealth store. Difficult to spend savings account. A wealth hedge against a falling AUD and CPI. Mad bank.
i started stacking because I wanted to own a huge chunk of metal like a pirate and maybe show people (seriously, I had some money that year) i couldnt afford gold so i got a silver bar on ebay and thought it was magical. i bought a few pieces of silver before i even knew all the reason why i stack now. so even if silver craps out, i did what i always wanted. ill just think "man, i was a pretty sweet pirate there for a while "
off the books savings plan. being a pirate. i stack silver cos i can't afford gold.. much anyway, i have a few little bits. i once was a pot head, so i just moved from buying one kind of ounce to another kind. i like the metal kind better, i can't smoke it, and apart from bits i have had to sell to cover some unexpected costs. i still have it all. unlike all the weed i brought, that has long being burned up.
