    After seeing it at the meet, and reading these suggestions, I think Napkin clamp/clip/holder is definitely a possibility.

    Was it ever determined definitively what this thing is? It's been bugging me today when I remembered it. Arrrrhh.

    so the spring pushes outwards? hmmm it does seem rather useless..
    maybe it is just a practice piece from someone learning silver smithing ?? and they stuffed up, was suppose to be a money clip, but the spring pushes the wrong way??
    who needs to open anything small outwards..
